There is a time in everyone’s golfing career where they realize they need to update their equipment. I went from borrowing my friend’s clubs for a couple of rounds, to some $60 pawn shop clubs, to my current full set of Wilson clubs. They’re just one of those cheap full sets for a beginning golfer, but now that I’ve really started to play regularly I feel that it is time for an upgrade. I play around 2-3 times a week. I’d let you know my handicap, but I really only play at my local 9 hole par 3 course (1,163 yards). I usually shoot around a 30 give or take a couple of strokes. My price “ceiling” is $500 and would appreciate anyone’s input on a nice iron set. I’m not partial to any particular brand so just whatever you guys have experience with or have heard good things about, I’d love to hear it.

Well these..

I've heard good things about the both Callaway sets and the Ping G5's. I've hit the X-20s and my buddy has Ping clubs. It seems like Ping makes irons with really "high" toes...does that make sense? haha i don't know if it does or not but Ping's have always looked funny to me...

Correct. It's not a particulary hard course, but it has it's holes. There is a 72 yarder that is a straight shot, a 194 yarder with water on the left and nothing good on the right, and everything in between. I think my last 3 scores have been 31, 32, and 28.

My personal recommendation would be to forget about the major manufacturers and get fitted by a certified clubfitter. Preferably one that's willing to work with multiple manufacturers. I'm not sure where you are in Texas but here's one for reference:

Some random thoughts:
1. Golf balls don't differentiate between manufacturers, they only understand physics. The most important things are that your new clubs fit you properly and you like them. Ping, TaylorMade, Mizuno, Titleist etc. spend over $100 million annually to convince you that their clubs are better.
2. You wouldn't wear shoes that don't fit, why would you play with clubs that don't fit?
3. Make sure you hit them OUTDOORS! Hitting into a net with launch monitors is nice but there is no substitute for hitting off the grass outdoors.
4. Don't buy blades. Don't succumb to the temptation to feed the ego and convince yourself that you need a "players" iron. A bunch of touring pro's play "game improvement" irons. The feel of a blade is unmatched when you hit the CoG, unfortunately that might only be 6-10 times a round or less for the average golfer. Game improvement irons will help you out when you miss the sweet spot or when your swing isn't at it's best.

Driver: VRS 9.5 degrees

Fairway Wood: 13 degrees
Hybrid: A3 19 degrees

Irons: i20's  Yellow dot

Wedges: Vokey's 52, 56 & 60

Putter: 2 ball

Ball: Penta; ProV

Depends on what you want. A lot of iron sets now seem to be like bricks on a stick. I switch from cg golds to AP1 and everything changed in terms of distance, trajectory, and consistency.

I actually just got back from my local golf shop. I saw NEW Callaway X-22's for $600, USED Callaway X-22's for $500, or NEW Callaway X-20's for $400...what do you guys think?

Put on those 20's!!! But I honestly think you can find them cheaper.

My theory is, "if it seems to good to be true, than it probably is". Not saying they are fakes, but I guess I'm scared that they might be lol. I've read post on here about people buying clubs off of ebay and they turn out to be fakes. I just don't want to get ripped off. Is this a reputable site?

Really, you never heard of them. Golf gear is just cheaper online, then in a marked-up store. Everyone here buys from them.

There are alot of fakes out there but dont be afraid of the internet. These are not fakes.

Rock bottom golf is as cheap as they come, and 100% legit...no fakes there. That being said, you can't go wrong with either the x-20's or the 22's. They are very similar and both great irons...

Rock Bottom is as legit as they come. One of the best Budget retailers on the Net...

      Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

      I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.

      I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
