I just had an epiphany regarding purchasing balls off Ebay - there are some sellers out there that are hawking new Pro v1x's for $35/dozen or thereabouts. That sounds all well and good, but the more I got to thinking about it, it didn't add up. The most discount that I'm aware of on legit Pro v1's is 25%, and that's for logo overrun balls (which are just as good as the new ones). Anyway, the two major golf stores I use are sold out of the logo balls and I don't want to pay $45/dozen for balls, so I order three boxes of 'new' pro v1's off ebay for $105. This was on 6/26, and the product has yet to arrive. I contacted the seller several times, and got a response back stating that he would either cancel/refund my order or I could have an extra box for free (which basically wipes out all his profit margin if he's legit). I checked his most recent feedback, and people were complaining that the balls were fake, etc, so I contacted my credit card and had them put the whole charge in dispute so I think everything should be cool on my end.

Now, I was curious as to who the guy is that was behind all these 'firesale' pro v1 prices, so I checked out his name and company name (don't want to give it out in public), and he has a facebook account with his real name on it and his location (Orange county, FL, in the Orlando area).

I decided to do a quick criminal records check from the Orange County circuit court, and the guy has a rap sheet at least 2-3 pages long, including several felony raps for burglary, weapons possession, and check fraud. I hope he gets nailed again over this - my only words to him would be 'don't drop the soap'.

Sorry you had to go through that. If you do want to find a good deal on golf balls, and if there is a Dick's Sporting Goods in your area, they sell pro-v1 x-outs for $29.99/dozen. I'm sure you can find them at other sporting goods stores too, but up here in Indianapolis, they are always in stock for that price.

Man o man....what has the internet come to? You cant even scam someone on eBay without them somehow being able to access your criminal records.....

LOL J/K man.

It is crazy though.....just type your name in google. If it isnt common like Jane Smith or Michael Williams then you can find a bunch of stuff about yourself on the web.

Ive never heard of anyone being able to make fake ProV's so thats interesting.

I usually get the logo overruns at Golf Galaxy but apparently everyone and their brother knows they sell them now so they're always out of stock.

Yeah, whenever golf galaxy has a good deal on something, it always sells out in minutes. As far as the x-outs go, they seem to be in stock at any Dick's I go to. I guess people don't want to have a big "X-OUT" on their balls.

That's what she said.

That sucks. I hope your dispute goes well and painlessly. You definitely always want to check a user's feedback before buying from them though. I never buy off someone with less than a 98/99% positive feedback and that has a good amount of items sold. Reading through the negative feedback is always a good idea too. Hope all goes well!

Cheers,

With Ebay especially, always apply the general rule of thumb: it it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

I buy the pro v1 practice (well used too, I just hunt now) from tgw and they are sometimes on sale for 25.

That does suck though.

How do you fake a ball? I am just guessing, scratching the logo off a shitty ball, and putting proV on the side?

refinishing a spalding ball with pro v1 logo, or just a factory on the blackmarket straight up makes a whole fake pro v1 and sells them i suppose.

I called Titleist years ago when I first saw ProV1 X-OUT and PRACTICE marked balls. If I remember correctly, the difference was that the X-OUT balls didn't meet manufacturing standards whereas the PRACTICE balls didn't meet cosmetic standards. I asked if that meant that the X-OUT would perform differently or not as well, the answer I got was "maybe". So, since then, I've only purchased regular or practice balls.

Although, I'm thinking I should try the X-OUT. I figure with my crooked swing + a crooked ball, the net result may be a straight shot =).

yea I dont think the Titleist XOUT ones at dicks say Xout on them. I think they just have a line through the Titleist logo or something like that.
