so on friday i finally broke par and shot -1 70 at my home course. my dad promised me when i shot par or better on the big course, he made this promise a few years ago when i was still a beginner, he would buy me a new set of ping irons. i dont need new irons so i was thinking of something else that i could get instead. i am currently trying to decide whether to get a new driver or a rangefinder. my driver is getting rather old, i still like it its just that its not the easiest driver to hit. currently my driver is what is keeping me from consistently shooting par. so i was wondering what are some easier to hit drivers, but still workable. and if you think a rangefinder would be more beneficial to get, what are some rangefinders i should look into.
thanks

Depending on what type of cell phone you use I would look into getting a range finder application. I have a Verizon Droid and I have an app called "Skydroid". Its a golfing range finder and its excellent. You just search for the course you are playing ( I haven't played at a course yet that it doesn't have on there) and it downloads and it will GPS you from your current location to the front, center and back of green, also any bunkers or water on the hole. You can also look at an zoomed out look of the hole so you know the layout. By far the best application Ive ever used on a phone and it was only $0.99!

If you dont have a phone that you can do that, I would still recommend a driver. You said so yourself that its the most lacking part of your game. Is the range finder REALLY going to improve your game as much as you think your driver would? Just my 2 cents tho and congrats on the -1!

Scotty! Unless you really love your putter, get a sweet driver like the super tri, or Ping's G15

At first i was looking at the first R9, but after hitting my friends i thought that it was too light. my driver has a rather heavier shaft and i've gotten used to it and like that i can feel it throughout my swing. i then looked at the supertri because some kid that i was playing with said that he switched from my exact same driver to the supertri and told me how much more forgiving the supertri is. i was also wondering what are the benefits and drawbacks of having a smaller sized driver over a larger sized one. and same thing for the length, ive read about how the new drivers are over an inch longer from models from previous years

Any Ping driver is going to be a solid performing driver. They are pretty much always the top rated - it is just that there aren't many Ping players out there, so they are not in the limelight as much as TM, Callaway, Nike. The 2 standard shafts you would typically see in the G15 both have a Stiff Flex weight of 60grams. However, the i15 is going to come with shafts with 65grams of weight which ever standard shaft you go for. You will already know that tinkering with your putter isn't a good idea if u like it, so that requires a lot of thought.

Let us know what you decide on anyway!

I would suggest a beer but it looks like that is out of the question!

Do you hit your driver well? What do you really wish you had while you are on the course? Rangefinders are great, you won't second guess that purchase if you get one.

If you have a smartphone, skip the Rangefinder. Plenty of apps within BB, iPhone, and Android to fit the bill.

Congrats on the round-gotta say that I find my 907 D2 to be one of the easiest-to-hit drivers I've ever used. I think you'll find a negligible difference in ease of use between nearly every 460cc driver as it is. If you like the shaft I'd stick with your driver and get one of the earlier suggestions-a nice rangefinder, or a Scotty. Nice thing about a putter like that is it will never become obsolete, or worn out-it could be a nice lifelong memento of the first time you broke par.

Do you like pancakes? At Perkins the answer is always yes - let your dad take you for breakfast. You'll get more mileage out of letting him off the hook than you'll ever know. Unless you folks are independently wealthy, in which case you could ask for a wheeled hardcase for travelling with your bags, then go on a father son buddy trip.

Congrats on shooting par!

I would get the rangefinder...unlike a new driver it will consistently help you knock strokes off your game by allowing precise distances to all targets, bunkers, mounds, forced carries, trees, etc.

You want a driver that is somewhat forgiving but workable? Isn't that what you have with the D2?

Such a good idea! That would be an infinitely better way of celebrating par!

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
