So today, I played my worst and my best in one round.

Course: Black Bear
Rating/Slope: 73.6/166
Par:72
Tips: 7,150

Front 9, par 35: 11 over
Back 9, par 37: 1 under
Total: 10 over, 82

Has this ever happened to anyone else where you shoot the worst you can on one 9 and then find it again on the other and put together a great run?

I mean, I went from + 11 to - 1: that is a big swing for me as I am normally consistent.

1 under for 9 holes is a personal best for me as well.

This has happened to me a few times before. Just last week in a tournament I posted a +1 37 on the first 9 and then came back with a horrible +11 47 on the second nine!

Wow, that's a tough course.

I ALWAYS play better on the back nine....it's sort of annoying to even play front nines now lol

I always play the back 9 much better than the front. I know part of this is because I don't always give myself the time I need to warm up. I don't know what you pre-round routine is but I need to hit at least a small bucket of balls and chip and putt for a total warm up time of about an hour prior to a round. I think my worst is something like a 15 shot swing. It is so dramatic that the people I am paired with always notice.

Not trying to be a smartass, but I think you've got the slope wrong. Just to make sure, I checked online and found the slope from the tips to be 142 (still plenty tough, to be sure). The only reason I mention it is that, if you use 166 in your handicap calculations, you'll have an artificially low handicap.

Yes, the slope is a typo - It is too late to go back and edit.

On the scorecard it is a 136 - I will use that for the index. Although I would rather use the 144 :)

Hah, I usually shoot great on the front, hack on the back. I played recently, and shot a pretty good 40 (par 72), then a 50. I feel like a hack now.

Dude, slope 166, thats ungodly. Thats above what Pro's usually play, i think pebble beach was at 155 for the men when they did that celebrity break 100 challenge.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
