I live in the land of 6 hours rounds too, and I chip to keep my sanity. Don't like staring at hackers who insists on walking and take 5 practice swings before blading/shanking their ball. Never had anyone complain about chipping though. Where were you playing ? VC or Dyker ?

Furtunately i´m only faces 2-3 times a year with 6hour rounds, thats when i bring a foldable chair and a book just to make the time go by - and yes i also chip around, but i dont see it as practice, more like entertaining myself just to make the time go by.

The only time someone gave me a lesson in rules regarding practicing during a round, was when i ran off to the range after 9holes to hit some balls - to my excuse back then, i really didnt know that this wasnt allowed .

Bethpage.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

Chances are if the pace of play is that slow their are going to be other groups pushing up behind you. But if nobody's behind me I'll chip around a little.
