So this isnt a how it works question. i get its your best 10 out of 20 differentials multiplied by .96 but i have been playing much worse lately and my handicap is going down. i entered a 54 (par 54 because my course has both a championship and par3 course) and an 88 and it went down to a +0.2. granted that at my course if half your scores are 86 you are a 9.6 index but i mean why is my handicap going down when my scores are higher. like when i entered them my scoring avg went up by .4
note-im not trying to brag, the math doesn't logically make sense that when i enter a high score my hcp would go down

The 88 isn't used in the calculation because it isn't one of your 10 best, while the 54 would be because that is an even par score. It also depends on what scores drop off the bottom of the list. If the old score that drops off is one the highest scores of your 10 best, and you then add that even par 54, it can result in a significant drop in your index.

How long is that par 3 course, because most cannot be used in a handicap. I think it has to be at least 3000 yards, otherwise it is counted as your short course handicap.

Two questions...

How does a basically scratch golfer (0.3 is listed)...
a) ... not know how handicap works, and
b) ... shoot an 88???

Something's fishy cody.

Your 88 and 92 stand out like Rory's 80 in round 2 at The Open - his only competition round > 69 on that course. Were you playing in nasty weather or using wrong-handed irons or something?

Two questions...

i explained how it works actually in the first sentence, i just dont understand how a high number would bring the index down when it shouldnt and no the 54 doesnt have a slope/rating so it shouldnt affect anything but scoring average

edit: just because i can hit the ball strait and get around in about par doesn't mean that i have to be a math genius. i really hate how people assume that if you are moderately ok at something you have to understand every part of the game especially something that doesnt really mean anything because in the end its just a number that is supposedly your "potential". it doesnt affect how anyone swings the club so why should i have to understand it to be a 0.3

You can probably figure it out yourself if you know your 20 most recent differentials from the current and past revision. That said, I would bet that you entered the 54 incorrectly and the computer is recognizing that as a -18 or something.

i just checked and i didnt. i asked the club pro and he said that i could have some really high differential that it knocked out

I thought the Math was more like this. (Score-Rating) x 113/Slope x 0.96
but if there's no rating to the course than this is not a valid Handicap. Try a regulation course and see how you do. If I had to guess (with no disrespect) your more like a 24 HC.

If that 54 was on an unrated course or a rated course shorter than the limit (which is 3000 or 3500 yards, IIRC), it shouldn't be posted. Even if it's not used directly in the computation, it shouldn't be knocking any scores out of your record.

Your handicap index can go down if (and only if) you post a score better than the worst of your previous best 10 scores. It doesn't have to be better than your current handicap, though, just better than the worst score that was contributing to the calculation. Of course, your index could go up even with a fairly good score if a better score gets pushed off the end of the last 20 rounds.

granted that at my course if half your scores are 86 you are a 9.6 index

Ok, doing a little math...If your ten best scores are 86 then you would be playing the equivalent of a track that is rated 74 with a slope of 141 to get a 9.6 index. That is one tough course!

If you play from the tips of some courses they are out there. There are 4 or 5 within a 30 min drive of Jacksonville that are over 7,000 yards with a 73+ rating and 140+ slope.

Cody, I think you need to host the Sandtrap Open...we could play all three from the tips and just suffer! Seriously, it looks like you have some nice places to play.

hahah i love it. i used to play this crappy 70.1 course and was like a 9 hcp then i went to these harder courses and now my course hcp at cyprian is high (where im a member) but when i go to play tournaments, because im used to such a tough course, i put up really low numbers bringing my index down. basically i play terrible at my home course because it is so hard but it pays off because it makes you better everywhere else

edit: the only problem is that its so expensive. to pay for greens fees at all these courses for 18 walking is $68, $50, $61 but i mean there worth it, the greens all roll like a tpc course
