G'day...

I'm having trouble with a high ball flight with my irons. I have a set of Taylormade RAC OS irons 3-PW. I replaced the stock stiff shafts with Dynamic Golf True Temper s300. Is there anything that I can do to these irons to help make a more penetrating ball trajectory with out going to new equipment all together?

I don't have any troubles with ball flight with my TM R9 driver & Cleveland Launcher 3w.

Thanks for help!

what is your swing speed?
One cause of a high ball flight is flipping at impact, so it mightn't be the equipments fault.

If you don't want to change your swing, get shafts with stiffer tips or with a higher kick (or both).

No. You probably should have researched and purchased a better fit of Iron at the beginning, now you've spent more money. At some point, in order to be more pleased, your going to have to alter your swing to imporve or eliminate the problem.

Post a video of your swing and we can tell if the swing or clubs are the problem.

i was actually on a launch monitor yesterday and getting a swing speed of 94-97mph. the pro that was with me did check my swing and I am a little handsy but other than that he didn't see any major changes.

he was trying to get me to buy a new set of irons and for this year at least it's not going to happen. i was hitting the new r9 irons(same shaft), r9 tp version and the new ping(can't remember the model now) but in all three cases my ball flight was much lower. i don't that the RACs where design to get the ball in the air.

so i'm still wondering if any other equipment adjustments can be made.

thanks.

without spending money on new shafts? you can play the ball further back in your stance without pushing the ball and at your backswing try not to pick up the club as quickly and keep it lower to the ground, its tricky and it changing your backswing slightly but it might also work to lower your ball flight since your angle of impact is lower than as upright like you are now.

Ball position back a bit and finishing hands low works for me. Taking more club and choking down a bit works too.

I'd wager money that you flip.

And the odds are well in my favor on that one. Your shafts aren't the problem here.

Check the ball position and also make sure that your left shoulder isn't a lot higher than your right. If your tilt is too steep try to flatten your left shoulder at address...maybe someone can post a picture. If you really want to test the flip theory, which there is a great chance this is the culprit, try pitching and punching your irons with a half swing keeping your hands solid. The S300 is not too blame as it is a lower ball flight shaft.

DYNAMIC GOLD steel shaft is already a low launch steel shaft. You don't need to reshaft it again.

Probably the ball position in your swing. Is it in the middle or slightly forward?

BTW I have a GRAPHITE Regular flex on my irons and the ball flight is penetrating.

that doesn't mean anything, you could have a really slow SS.

are you saying he should use graphite regular flex shafts?

Like I Said.... it's not his shaft, it's his swing that need a check. Most Pro are using DYNAMIC GOLD for penetrating ball flight.

About my shaft, it does not matter what shaft I use on my iron, it's always penetrating. IT'S YOUR SWING THAT CAN CAUSE A PENETRATING BALL FLIGHT. Your shaft is only a second factor. The easiest way to lower your ball flight: Don't make a Full finish position by swinging to your back. Make a 1/2 finishing position, the club is still in front of you.

I'm don't think it's the shaft either. Change from the stock shafts to the DG s300 has made a difference. I can play a draw and a fade much easier with these shafts compared to the stock ones. Obviously, there are always some minor swing changes that can be made. Someone mentioned bending to me. What's everyones take on that? Take an degree or two off. Maybe even up a deg.

BTW, thanks for all the input. Just nice bouncing some idea off other people.

also someone mentioned the ball i'm playing. I go between the Bridgestone e6 and the NXTs. Low spin will help, but i do give up a little going at the greens.

dynamic gold shafts are the stock shaft for most irons, they're not some super low-launch shaft that only the pro's use.

I think the shaft makes a huge difference, I have a regular shaft in my driver and i hit the ball high. Which i like. I could use a stiffer shaft to keep the ball down lower if i wanted to. Yes you can manipulate your swing to make the ball launch lower, but why do that when you can just tweak your clubs? Why do they have movable weights on drivers? Shouldn't people learn to cure their slice/hook by themselves?

dynamic gold shafts are the stock shaft for most irons,

What???!!! You gotta to be kidding me. Dynamic Gold are not stock shaft by today's standard. They are heavy (about 126 g) and has a high bend point (means low trajectory). This shaft is not for every one.

They are only installed on Pro-level irons such as Mizuno MP series and Taylormade TP (Tour Preferred) series. Most irons today have a stock graphite shaft around 70 gram of weight and a low kick point for higher launch. check all the manufactures websites.... My other set of irons (i use the 3i and 4i of them) have them as the stock shaft.

The woods also have the DG shafts too. A good few people i play golf with have them as well. I'll be moving into the other set soon.
