I know I’m really resurrecting this thread but what do you guys think of Jason Day’s style of dead hand wedge from say 30-90 yards.
You can start with a fairly vertical shaft so it still uses the bounce I think.
Is speed the limiting factor here because of the lack of wrists, or would the feel of dead hands actually cause lag on the downswing and actually end up using more leading edge than bounce anyway.
I just wonder would it be easier for distance control in terms of backswing length.
Any opinions on it?

I don't generally have a problem of it. It's not the highest pitch, or the softest.

He also generally lifts the heel a little off the ground (more vertical from the down-the-line view) too, which removes a little bounce.

It's a slightly different type of shot. Kind of in the middle between the low spinner or chip and the higher, softer pitch.

Love resurrecting this thread! The float-load feel bit and then the old video I think from Mike on how to hit low and high chips were the kickstart to my short game journey, where I play well below my handicap (officially 9.x right now, via arccos I only lose 1 stroke per round to a scratch golfer in my short game).

I've spent lots of time with float-load and I can be a sniper inside ~40 yards with my GW and 60*. But I actually just started trying a version of this for like ~40-70 yard shots! 70-115 I have a like hands to belly button height stock partial swing shot that I hit with SW-9i dialed.

    • Day 286 6-15 low point control using towel on the ground. Making a bit of progress there.  No ball. Worked on lowering arm, hit foam balls. Recorded
    • Day 42, June 15.  Played 18 today.  Shot 86, no birdies.  Played the par-3s in +2 and par-5s in +1 (there are only three).  Played the 11 par-4s in a total of +12, three triples and only two pars.  One of those triples was a 4-putt (in my defense, it started at the collar, it's a very long par-4 that required driver 4-wood, and the first putt was from 66').   I haven't calculated strokes gained yet for the round and I'm very very curious.
    • Driver might be out of the bag indefinitely. All I got for success on camera and ball flight is like 50% swing speed. Anything more and it’s all over the place and strike is all over the clubface.  I got no athleticism/flow right now with what I want to do. It’s too dangerous for me because the swing will just get too long and unstable at P4. It’s very robotic feeling right now.

    • He's not and GEARS doesn't really measure toward your midline. It's measured at the joint. That's not why his use of "midline" is bad (part of the reason is that your "midline" is twisted, the top of your sternum can be pointed at a different place than the belt buckle, and your shoulders protract and retract, too. I think he's just trying to use midline to say which way the arm is moving. But they have terms for that — adduction and abduction — so whatever.
