I'm spraying balls all over the place.

Driver: Push
3 Wood: Straight as an arrow
3H: Sky high but straight
4-5 iron: straight as an arrow
mid irons: push or fade
short irons: pull

No consistency at all. I'm thinking my issue could be ball placement. I can think of no other reason that a player would hit long irons straighter than shorter ones.

Sounds like a swing path issue. Have a Pro or a trusted friend look at your backswing...you're probably coming too far inside which causes you to swing inside-out...meaning you'll push the ball if the club face is parallel to that swing path.

EDIT: Sorry, I should give you a club-by-club ball placement:

Driver: On your leading toe or just inside of it
3 wood: a little more inside of your driver
Long irons: middle front
Short irons: Middle of stance

I thought inside-out was a good thing. Could taking a stronger grip on my driver and a weeker grip on my short irons correct it?

It is my personal belief that your grip should be the same on every club that merits a full swing. If you have to have different grips for each club, then your swing is wrong/shaft stiffness is wrong (driver) or something. An inside-out swing can be a good thing if you like to play a draw. I use a slight inside-out swing because I prefer to turn the ball over most of the time...and I know that if I end up pushing it its because I didn't get my club face square on impact, but rather left it open.

My advice to you is to take a lesson. You probably wont have to take multiple lessons, but just one to get a Pro to diagnose your problem...whether it be with grip, ball placement, or swing path. Once you know what the problem is, you can correct it.

well sorta. i mean taking the club back to the inside isnt good. you want to keep in on plane going back and then slot it inside on the downswing. taking t back to the inside causes one to get stuck and compensate in order to produce a decent ball flight.

That is exactly what I do. My swing path is inside - out. My driver will start right but fly straight because of my inside - out swing path with an open club face (relative to my stance) at impact. For some reason I get my irons squared up at impact so my club path causes a draw.

Just like Sarge said your swing path is inside to outside. If it pushes the ball right that means the club face was open at impact relative to your stance. If you draw or hook that means your club face is square with your stance but the swing plane causes the ball to draw. The only thing that can fix this is getting your club on a better path and keeping the club face square at impact. A little bit inside - out path is fine but you can't let it get to drastic.
