I've made a new game for myself to practice. It is fun and free. There is a big nice (relatively, its not the quickest or nicest) green at a course near my house with holes. I play a game with myself seeing how I score relative to par. I use 3 balls and go to a different spot every time. I keep score on all three balls to keep it moving, holing out is a birdie, par is up and in, and so on. I putt everything out as I am playing a match. This is my new replacement for golf this fall as I don't have time to play this fall but have a couple of hours a couple of times a week to myself. I played 27 and shot 13 over with 2 doubles. It really made it fun to practice as it is a game in itself. It puts pressure on you which is good. Hopefully when I come back to the real thing in the spring I will be a up and in machine. It makes you work on two very important things, chipping/pitching and short putting. I can't hit it stone dead more than a 1/3 of the time so I hit alot of the 3-6 foot putts. It is more fun than any drill i've ever done or any other way i've ever practice chipping and putting.

I was talking to a + handicapper when I was chipping.

He said take 9 chips, 3 easy, 3 semi-hard and 3 hard. If you can get all 9 of them up and down consistently you won't need to practice anymore. I've never managed to get 9, my best is 7. I guess I need to do some more practice!

If I do this game as much as I think I might (2-3 times a week) for the next couple of months I have a feeling I will be vastly improved.

I play a similar game as well, but mine is only putting. I practice 10-15 footers and 2 putts is par. For chipping I have some string that I put in a circle 3 ft all the way round. I practice bump n runs into the circle and one hop n stop chips. If I can get 10 balls in the circle in a row, I tighten the circle 6 inches until I cant get 10 in a row.

The course I frequent has different chipping/pitching greens and putting greens, so I can't practice putting from my chips. I would love to, though.

I have the same issue. The putting green on my home course is pristine, but that is because no chipping is allowed on it, ever. The chipping green is for shots up to about 40-50 yards, so it gets pockmarked with ball marks and is unfriendly to putt on. Fortunately there is another course near my house which has a shorter chipping area so the green doesn't get as beat up. That is where I do most of my serious short game practice.
