Couple random questions...but back in the early 2000s, I remember a buddy telling me that often tour caddies stay in different hotels then the players. Maybe in cases of well known tour players or high profile, the caddies stay in the same hotel.

Do some players room with their caddies? Also, I was under the impression to that often times the clubs stay with the caddy, versus the player.

what other kind of interesting facts/details exist between caddy's and/or their respective player the average person probably doesn't know?

I doubt they share a room. If my golfer was in the 4 seasons I'd be 4 seasons too. Im like that though. I really enjoy better hotels.

and not to thread hijack but how much of the endorsement money do they get? I see caddies wearing titleist hats etc.. Do they get 10% of the endorsement deals too? Thatd be sick. If they didnt could they wear a different hat for money?

Caddies work on a 10% of purse margin. Caddies do not stay where players stay while making 90% less salary. If player misses the cut then a flat fee is paid for the pro-am and thurs and fri. This is not enough to stay at expensive digs. Players will not room with caddies. Caddies will room with other caddies to save money. more than one has slept in their car to save money.

Caddies typically stay with other caddies in a different hotel.

Caddies work out their own arrangements for sponsorship. It's not common, and even those who have deals aren't making a bunch. Caddies aren't seen very often. Even Stevie Williams and Bones aren't on TV all that often.

Im just saying if your pros at 4 million a year youre at $400,000. You can stay at the best resorts. It's up to the individual whether they want to or not and most pros DONT pull $4M a year but even at $1m as a caddy youre at $100k You can still stay at 4 seasons, St. Regis, preferred etc.. Actually now that I think about it were talking 100 nights a year at least in hotels. That would be 20-50k in hotel fees if you stayed at the better hotels. It would be a write off of course though. Along with your mortgage in a house you're barely in. Hmmm, I might have to be a caddie. I need write offs bad.

As far as the sponsorhsip Ive never paid attention but if your pro is sponsored by Titleist would callaway even approach you to wear their hat etc? And if you did how would that look and would the pros sponsor get pissed?

It's worth noting: there is no TOUR standard for caddie pay. It's entirely between the player and the caddie. If I'm on tour, and you agree to caddie for me for 5%, that's fine. Conversely, if I agree to pay you 20%, that's fine too. There are standing rumors of Stevie Williams and Bones being paid flat fees.

I can't imagine any company would spend any amount of money getting the caddie of a player not on their staff to wear the hat. The pro's sponsor would probably be upset, and if this ever happened, every future endorsement contract would likely have wording prohibiting this behavior (if the contract doesn't already have it).

Some do. It's not a blanket thing. Each caddy works out his own arrangements with his player regarding retainers and percentages. I don't know why you'd say categoriaclly that "Caddies work on a 10% of purse margin" because it's not true.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
