Getting fed up of this now, off the tee with all my woods I am fine, all my Irons off the deck are fine, but long irons (4-6) off the tee are terrible, always either catching them thin and right, or high and right, so any Par 3 over 160 and I am screwed...

The par 3's ruined my score today, played a course with 5 par 3's and scored 5/5/4/5/4
As an example, in this same round I hit 5i and 6i from the fairway and put both on the green yet from a tee could not hit either straight.

I have even started tee'ing the ball as low as possible to make it like I am hitting off the deck but no joy!

Distance is always pin high just well right, any idea's before I see a pro?

when it's on the tee you swing harder?

As RC said, just put them down on the ground if you can hit them well off the ground.

without knowing anything about your swing, it sounds like you're speeding up your tempo and trying to hit the ball too hard because its a tee shot.

Since your tempo is sped up your swing doesn't have time to square up the clubface, and you're making contact with the clubface still open.

Just slow it down, try and pretend its not a tee shot.

It also sounds to me like you may be trying to hit it on the upswing rather than hitting it like a normal iron shot. You are likely either flipping your wrists at it or setting the ball too far forward like a driver. You're obviously hitting on the upswing either way if your misses are thin or high, and are inconsistent. I tend to have a similar affliction when it comes to hitting irons off the tee, so I just hit off of the teebox grass instead of teeing the ball up. Best of luck!

Your desire to change has to be greater than your desire to stay the same.

Cheers I will try them off the grass, I don't take divots so won't annoy anyone at the club

Still gonna get a pro to look at me though.

Sounds like you could be trying to get under the ball when it is tee'd up. Whereas when it is sitting on the ground, you hit more down on it.

Either way, you should perhaps look into getting more weight forward at impact. Perhaps work on holding the flying wedge.

Going right could mean that your going after it a bit too hard or fast. If so,... heres what I do. I go to a stronger left hand grip for a few holes until I start seeing a slight pull. Your timing will come back as soon as you relax about the mental block.

From the 25th for two weeks the resort is closed full stop, no members, guests or residents, the Twenty Ten has been the main focus for a while now though so will be in mint shape.

Yeah maybe, what is the flying wedge lol?

Yeah could be going at it too hard, just hard not to for some reason with par3's? mental block is a big factor as well.

Are you kidding? Why should anyone be annoyed about taking a divot off the tee? Watch the pros or any good golfer on a par three. Even if the ball is on a tee, it is so low as to be nothing more than a good lie. And they ALWAYS take divots, because they are hitting down on the ball.

I am a greenskeepers worst nightmare with irons on a tee box. I dig pretty deep with the 6-PW.

Yeah one of the guys I play with (6 HC) takes big divots with the same irons, so not sure why I was worrying about playing it of the deck.

On this note, his SW divots you could tie to your feet and use as shoes, or as he likes to do, hangs it from his belt buckle and says "70's bush" before replacing it on the crater he dug LOL

An update fro anyone who ares

I played all the par3's this weekend off the deck and my scores for the 5 par3's were as follows 3/5/2/4/4 the 5 being a 3 put as the flag was 40 feet away from my ball, but I am well happy with the results.

Just remember, the tee is just to give you a good lie, sitting up nicely, and you still need to hit it like a regular shot. You can't swing up into it or try to crush it. If it's your tempo that's the problem, you could always try taking one club extra and swinging at around 3/4 to try and hit the green.

    • For such a nice membership, there have been some bad incidents in the past few years.  We had someone voted out a couple of years ago over something he did and he harassed the board members for three months until he moved out of the area.   Generally they’ve tried to do things like tournament handicaps and identify certain people who they know should be lower and adjust it somehow.  I can understand not wanting to go thru something like the guy who was voted out again i emailed the pro who forwarded it to the handicap committee.  They are going to see what can be done.  I walked someone thru what happened and they are going to nudge him to post the score from the match and see what he does.  Since he didn’t put anything in the electronic scoring past 13, based on how he played 14 and 15 plus having to take bogey on 16-18 for after he left, he should post 83.  We’ll see if it’s even higher,   Since he was really even thru 13, then doubled 14 and parred 15 my guess is he really shot 75 being generous and giving him 2 pars and a bogey on the three holes he didn’t play.    i shot 88, getting 16 shots for my course handicap which is net even and I lost on 13.  We do brackets where handicaps should be within 4-5 of each other.  Most matches only have 1-2 shots as a difference between players  neither of us posted the score yet.  There was something in the match play rules about whether or not to post your score.  I couldn’t remember if we were supposed to or not.  I don’t think he was going to post that, because even with his inflated score it would be the lowest score in his recent 20. Lucky I didn’t because they want to see what he does post and they don’t want me posting so he can try to calibrate his score.
