Club face at top of backswing

How the hell does my club face get to this point? I start square to target and at impact it's square (9 iron, had great ball flight).

The clubface is closed, so you could be holding it off a bit coming through the ball. Since you also got a cupped left wrist, it would lead me to believe you got a strong grip.

Thanks, zeph. This has always been a problem for me and I went to a very neutral grip from a strong grip. I must be doing something weird in the backswing.

Thanks a lot, UT. That explains it pretty well for me, although they show a cupped left wrist with an open face, the opposite of my "problem". I think I'll look into the Swingyde, I've seen it mentioned several times on the board.

Question: If I am able to make square impact and get a decent result, is it something I can learn to live with or will it catch up to me at some point and cause my swing to haywire?
