I am looking at the Callaway Ft-IQ but I have noticed that there are many versions of the FT .. there is the FT-IQ , FT-5 , FT-9 , FT-IZ is there a really big difference from the IQ from the others or is the IQ just the "most forgiving" ??

You'll have to forgive me if this is a dumb or worn out question, but I haven't bought anything Callaway in over 8 years , so I don't know to much about their line of clubs... I just know that the FT-IQ is comparable to the Nike Sumo 5900 as far as forgiveness

The FT-iZ is the updated and non-square follow-up to the FT-iQ. These are their super-forgiving drivers. The FT-5 and FT-9 are, I believe, less forgiving designs (with other advantages).

The FT is the Callaway term for "Fusion Technology," their buzzword-compliant method of using several metals with different densities to adjust the center of gravity. They apply it across their product line, not just to drivers.

In the bag:
FT-iQ 10° driver, FT 21° neutral 3H
T-Zoid Forged 15° 3W, MX-23 4-PW
Harmonized 52° GW, Tom Watson 56° SW, X-Forged Vintage 60° LW
White Hot XG #1 Putter, 33"

Awesome! Thanks for the answer.. so I am correct in choosing the FT-IQ because i am looking for a more "forgiving" driver...I really like the sqare head and hit the Nike 5900 REALLY well, but I can't bring myself to buy Nike clubs...not really sure why, but i just don't want to buy Nike and everyone has been telling me the FT-IQ is a GREAT cllub

I tested the FT-IQ, FT-9, FT-IZ, and liked the FT-IZ best, but the price was prohibitive ($399) compared to the FT-9 ($200), and FT-IQ ($149). I went with the FT-9. I found I hit the FT-9 and FT-IZ more forgiving, and longer. If money isn't a concern I'd go with FT-IZ, otherwise I felt the FT-9 was the best compromise, but like anything you should see how they work with your swing.

Marketing.

According to Callaway website it's a bit more than marketing: The FT-iQ will have a 1 degree closed face and will only come in the draw bias. The FT-iQ Tour will have a .5 degree open face and will only come in a neutral bias. The stock shaft on the Tour version will be around 9 grams heavier and have a little bit higher kick point which will help to keep the ball down a little bit lower.

This is correct. Also the FT-iQ is only in integer lofts (9, 10, 11, etc), while the FT-iQ Tour is only half-integer lofts (9.5, 10.5, etc).

The FT-iQ is a great driver if you like the square head. I've got a 10 degree draw-biased one and, while many people warn against the evils of draw-biased drivers, I don't find it to be noticeably different from other drivers I've used. For beginners and those without super-consistent swings, I don't think it's that big a deal. It took me a while to get used to the look of my FT-iQ, but I have decided I like it. I'd slightly prefer the non-draw model simply because the slight angle of the face at address is a bit bothersome, but it's not something that's going to make me go out and buy a new driver. I don't think you'll go wrong with the -iQ or -iQ Tour, especially at the prices compared to the newer Callaway clubs.

I played the FT-IQ Tour last year and it was a great club! If you don't mind the square head and are looking for a forgiving driver, the FTIQ is an excellent choice. And being they are no longer Callaway's "current" driver, they can be bought new for very cheap (I think they are going for $150-199 at most places I've seen them). And the Fubuki shaft that comes stock in the Tour version, and as one of the option in the IMix version, is the best shaft I've ever used. Had a wonderful, low-mid boring trajectory.

What I Play:

Driver: R9 460
4 Wood: G15

Hy: Callaway FT 3Hy

Irons: AP1 4-PW

Wedges: Vokey 52* & 60*, Mizuno MP-T 10 58*

Putter: Newport Studio Select 2.7

Ball: Nike One Vapor

would you guys recommend the imix version, since shafts are readily available on ebay?? sounds like a pretty cool idea to let the consumer actually swap out shafts

yeah. I would go with the Imix version. It would be nice to have shaft options. But go with one that has the Fubuki shaft in it and I doubt you will want any other shaft. It is a great shaft!

Well, I finally scored a great deal on a FT-IQ Tour with a Mitsubishi Rayon Fubuki 63xct stiff shaft.... I had been waiting and waiting to see if i could find a deal on the Imix but i got this one for $65.00 so i couldn't pass it up. Can't wait to try this bad boy out.

Thanks for all the input guys

    • Day 8 (28 Jun 26) - Worked with face position at address and overall setup - open/neutral/closed - and setting up for resulting shot shapes - using 8i and hard foam balls.  It was abbreviated as the thunder began to rumble. Got in about 20 swings before calling it.
    • Tale of two swings.  Swing 1: Slightly outside takeaway (hands move outside of target line) only to allow trail elbow over collapsing at P4. Doesn't take much to overdo it for the trail elbow collapse to only further exaggerate. That's death. Swing 2: Hands stay slight in at takeaway for a much better trail elbow condition at P4. This is a hard sell from an instinct perspective. More focus on un-weighting and re-weighting of lead foot to unlock a bit more mobility of hips and torso. A major flaw that creeps up often is me swinging flat footed and becoming overly armsy-collapsy as a result. Got reminded of this the hard way during my 2nd round match for club net championship. Was cruising along 2up until I made the turn. Then lost the swing for next five holes. Andy was playing good enough to capitalize. By the time I regained my swing on 16th, it was too late. Even Andy was like "That was a gift". Obviously that stings because have played well enough lately. Should have closed him out of the game comfortably with a few holes to spare. Shoulda woulda coulda. Tough lesson. Damn. P.S. I know the swings look very similar but trust me there is a difference.
