If you are one of those who took that $500-$900 step, I want to know how "worth it" it turned out to be. How much did your consistency improve? Do wish you would have done anything different looking back?

I haven't got mine fit yet, but the places around here it ranges from $15-$20 a club

We have a great place in Fort Worth called "Leonards Golf Links" which is staffed with pros that do personal, custom fittings. They charge $55 for a fitting, but waive that fee if you're buying a new set from them. This is what I'm looking at doing. However, before spending that kind of money, being that the really good irons start at about $400 and go up to $900, I'd just like to hear from someone who has taken this step and tell me how it turned out for them....kind of seeking encouragement so-to-speak. :)

$55? Do it. You won't regret it. Depending on what you're bagging now and how your fitting works out, you might not need new clubs. Chances are, your current set can be reconfigured to fit you better.

I've had every club in my bag fit and it can make a huge difference. Having the right shaft, especially, can make all the difference.

Absolutely worth it. Even if you don't buy clubs from them, you'll have the measurements for whenever you do buy. It will make a difference in your game.

The only thing i got mine fitted for are the lie and angle. I need to get a heavier shaft in mine, i swing to hard and to strong for the taylor made superfast shafts. Thats my christmas gift to myself. Though i was thinking of getting some AP2's or Mizuno's and just have the shafts upgraded in the clubs.

That's what I was hoping when I first starting asking pros questions (that I could "fix" my set)...but everyone of them got the same exact look on their face when I said I was playing TaylorMade T200s...they then followed with something like "yeah....those are not

too bad, but......" So I'm thinking they should know what they are talking about. After all, they get paid for the fitting, but don't make any money off the sale of the clubs, so hopefully sales isn't a reason for them telling me to upgrade.

Sometimes it's not necessarily a sales pitch, but depending on the club/construction materials, the hosels do not lend them selves to being bent willingly. I saw on TV once that even trying to bend 1-2* out of some sets literally shatters the hosel and ruins the club.

I am 6'2" and was playing a standard set of clubs for a while and then (based on a fitting by my instructor) switched to clubs that were 2 degrees upright . This made a huge difference and I would never go back to standard lie clubs. Haven't gotten fit for length or shafts, etc, etc but will do that in the next season.

Depends on the material of the clubs. I think the golf pro who fitted me to my clubs got about 1-2° of angle change in my irons and about 1° of lie change, thats what he was comfortable with doing. Believe me its hard to watch, spending 500+ on irons and watching them just yank into those clubs in a vice is a scary thing.. ;b

It's totally not a '$500-$900 step' dude. Get measured up my local professional and he will tell you what adjustments you need to make to your clubs. You can then ask him to make these adjustments.

Find out your ping colour code, and choose from loads of ping sets on ebay which are going to be right for you because the colour code system with ping is probably the best system out there. You can get fit online, but it varies where ever you go.

Seems there are several repliers here that have been fitted for shafts or for lie...but I guess no one has ever done the fitting specifically for a brand new set and had the whole new set built to your measurements? Perhaps outside of the tour players, I will be somewhat of a "pioneer". But please keep the comments coming...I'm learning things here.

Can't bro. My hossels are not bendable.

My suggestion is to go to a place that allows you to hit clubs outside so you can see the actual ball flight. I did mine inside on a simulator and my fitted set is no different than my old set. I am very disappointed for the money I spent for the new clubs.

Posted
OH DEFINITELY!!! OK....here's what they do....they first take you out to the range and watch you hit your own clubs. They look for things like gaps in yardages b/w clubs, inconsistent problems through the set, for example if you hit your 4, 5, and 8 irons really great but was hooking all the others or something to that effect. Second they have a shop in the back with every club head, shaft, and grip imaginable. They build you a club that is what they think you are needing...then it's back outside to see how you hit it. Adjustments are made with interchangable parts until you find the magic. Then each sequential club is done the same way. When done, each club in your brand new set was built just for you.

Actually, each and every one of my clubs were built to my exact specifications across the board one by one. Length, loft, lie, shaft/flex, etc. My wedges were even hand ground to play exactly how I wanted them to. I was extremely meticulous when it came to how my irons were built, so much so that I have two sets. I did the same with my woods and wedges.

So...looking at your handicap...I have to assume that was the point where you really start shaving strokes off your game?

In 1994, I got custom made Ping Eye-2 clones. The heads were 2* flat, and really straightened out my irons which I had been hooking for several years.

I went to a more upright stance a few years back, and now play standard lie clubs. For most people, a static fitting will do the works. If you are looking to play competitive golf (amateur tourneys or aspiring pro), and you have a stable swing, the custom route might give you an edge.

If you want a current production model iron, you can get fitted for it and get the set from the factory, with minimal extra cost unless you upgrade shafts or grip.

    • I have trouble with vertigo on occasion, but have gotten nutritional and biofeedback tips to keep it at bay. Dehydration can help trigger v-like symptoms so one recommendation, along with maintaining overall hydration, is to start with 8 oz. of water early in the morning. A meta-analysis on Golf As Physical Activity indicated that golf is rated as a moderately intensive physical activity. This scientific literature review came from the University of Edinburgh. The physical activity level ties into hydration. A former university colleague was a marathon runner who had published a couple of articles on endurance training. He likewise said that golf was a moderate physical activity especially when the round stretched past  the two-hour mark. For hydration he recommended switching from water to electrolyte drink on the back nine (past two hour point of exercise) to prevent cramping. At the two-hour point of moderate activity, water starts flushing electrolytes out of the body, which can lead to fatigue and cramping. (I have had trouble with leg cramps in the past during exertion.) During a round, I start out with water on the front nine and switch to sports drink on the back nine. If the day is unusually hot, I may drink 8 oz. of Pedialite concentrate before going to the course. Maintaining overall hydration plus on-course boosters keeps me going.
    • Personally I’d try booking direct first - either via the Vidanta golf reservations number/email or through the resort concierge - especially for Christmas/New Year. Vidanta’s main courses (Greg Norman and Nicklaus designs) are popular and can book out fast this time of year, so direct often gives you the best shot at your preferred tee times.
