Flying Elbow is a VERY common swing flaw, that is tough to notice on your own. (but so are most swing flaws)

I may have a slight case....every now and then.

Any body have drills or advice on how to CLIP the wings off that FLYING ELBOW?

Flying Elbow

In all seriousness, a big mirror in your garage would help you identify flaws. I've got one from the previous owners (he was an avid golfer) in our garage and I head out there to check my swing a couple times a week. Plus you can flex in the mirror too. Which is cool.

I used to fly my elbow alot, for practice I used to hit a bunch of shots at the range while trying to keep a headcover pinned under my armpit, helped me get the feeling of not flying it.

tying a rope is a good idea alright but an easier way is to take a shot and remember to keep your elbow at your side all through the shot, it sounds a little crazy but it works and the shot is as good as the next guy, just swing back and thru but keep that elbow stuck to you're side!!..it works!!

The elbow can extend somewhat on the backswing, just make the first move down, the returning of the right elbow to the side with a lateral shift. (Per Harvey Pennick)

yeah, i also have a flying elbow and tend not to worry about it too much.

i follow the advice a la pennick and work more on getting it to return to the proper position at the start of the down swing, using pennicks slow motion and magic move drills.

The best drill to do to keep your elbow in is to put a headcover under your armpit. Just hit several balls while focusing on keeping that headcover locked in! Good Luck!

    • Day 133: did a stack session.
    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.

    • Day 209 (27 Nov 24) - Easy session with the LW - short pitches replicating greens side up and downs. Finished up with the 7i and hard foam balls - making 1/2 to 3/4 swings with deliberately slowed tempo…from varied lies.
    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
