wedge loft choices

well i have been thinking about moving to 4 wedges and dropping my 3 iron to accommodate for an extra wedge. i have also been hitting my wedges much farther than normal(SW 115, LW 105) so i was thinking about going from a 47* PW to a 52* 58* 64* so i can have them to play 135, 120, 105, 85. what do you guys think about this set up?

The gaps seem fine to me. How confident are you with 20 yard gaps between some of your wedges?

well im alright with it but i dont know if i could make it much more efficient because i dont have a club at the moment that i can hit 80 yds with a full swing and its a shot that i really need as well as the 120 shot with the courses i'm playing. i was just wondering if anybody would seem to think that the lofts were too high or if there was a better idea in general. thanks

consider a setup more like 60, 56, 50/52, and a pitching wedge

wow ive never heard anyone hit a 64 over 50 yards. sure didnt think that was possible.

a 58 is about as lofted as you should go IMO. you can always play it up in your stance and work with 75%, 50%, 25% swings. But maybe you can hit a 64 that long and need it. play the clubs that you need and that make sense to you.

yeah i just get a crazy amount of shaft tilt at impact and just de-loft the hell out of the club, thats where i get the distance from

The Titleist Clubs 2010 catalog gives all the club specs on the "standard" 17 loft-lie combinations for Vokey SM wedges.

Be aware that the shaft lengths only decrease in 1/4" increments ever so often as they move from 48* down from 64*. The 52* and 58* would have a normal half-inch shaft difference, but the 64* would only have a 1/4" shaft difference from the 58*. When you're selecting your wedge mix, make sure you're aware of the shaft lengths of the ones you pick. If I stay with CG14s and go with 50-54-58, I'll only have 1/4" length difference between shafts. Rule of thumb is that 4* and a half-inch difference in shaft length between clubs equates to about 10 yards in distance for the average player. So, I could end up with pretty tight distance bunching with this wedge mix.

Anything is possible on the internet. Phil hit a soft 60° at the U.S. Open on the 7th hole so I guess a 64° could go 85 yards although I find it hard to imagine.

To the OP, you do realize you don't need to hit your wedges to a full swing... I don't understand why you would even want to take a full swing with 64° to go 85 yards. So would you add another 70° wedge for a 60 yard shot or fit another wedge in between your 52° and 58° so you can fill the 20 yard gap? Also what would you do with the distance gap in between your 19° hybrid and 4 iron? I would imagine that would be a decent size gap. Just out of curiosity, what shaft do you play in your wedges?

Well, if I'm going to have 4 wedges in my bag i might as well have them be put to good use. Its easier to hit 60 yds with my 85 yd club than 60 yds with my 105 yd club. I'm not here to argue or to look "cool" or tell everybody i hit it longer than i actually do. I wouldn't want to waste my time making up lies that are pointless, or waste your time for that matter, i'm here to get some advice. And due to the fact that i de-loft the club so much its hard for me to even hit a 3-iron so its serving no use in my bag anyways

I use CG14s & have a 52-56-60. My distances respectively are 100-75-50.

i have this golf mag (cant remember which one) that breaks down each tournament of the year and it shows what was in each winners bag
there was i think 2 guys that had more then 3 wedges (other than a PW of course)
and of those two guys, only one had a wedge over 60 degrees......can u guess who???

a majority of the set ups were 52/60 or 54/58

all im getting at, is that as a 2 index, you obviously have the skills to make quater, half and three quarter shots...and if you dont...learn them

i have recently switched from a 52/56/60 set up to A 54/58 set up
it makes the decision much easier of what club to pick and what shot to make

no, there was no pics of the bag's themselves

i think it was "Golf Magazine" or something it just said what clubs they used to win that tournament it was neat to see how their bags changed from tournament to tournament - changing out fwy's for hy's or long irons different wedge set up's etc... but 98% of the guys carried only 2 wedge set ups (again not including the PW)

Wedges are for finesse shots at shorter distances. What is the point of de-lofting them and getting greater distance? Makes no sense to me.

its not that i purposely do it its just part of my swing
