Was re-reading Harvey Penick's "Little Red Book" and decided to use one ball for practicing my short game today before I played 9 holes. Practicing with more than one ball puts no pressure on hitting your first because a lot of the times you stroke it to get a gauge then hit the next one close. Some times the initial one is good and the ones after are not so good because you pay less attention. So I decided on the one ball short game practice. Chip/pitch by doing my entire routine then going to the ball and putting out with my full routine. This helped me shoot par on the front 9 and I give a lot of credit to the pre round practice and of course my improvements in my short game as of late.

One of the things I like about European golf ranges at courses is that you bring and pick up your own balls. It's different and not for everyone, but I thought more about my swing and the walks back and forth made me concentrate better.

So many people at ranges blasting away as if there were a time limit, not really thinking.

Kill slow play. Allow walking. Reduce ineffective golf instruction. Use environmentally friendly course maintenance.

hmmm....i kind of do a similar drill

i use 3 balls, BUT...i hit each one to a different hole on the practice green
i use my full routine to hit the shot, then walk up and try to one putt each one
this helps practice getting up and down when you miss a GIR

more cause im lazy!! hahaha!

same idea, more balls........ (thats what she said.....)

Yeah don't have that luxury most of the time since there are others in the practice area.

I really like this tip! I always use 3 balls whether I'm putting or chipping on the practice green and you're right, I'm almost always using the first ball to judge for the second and third. I'm definitely going to try this out before my next round/at the range!

Interesting idea. I always chip a long tube of balls, pop them back into the tube and do it again and again. Never putt from where they land, even when I'm the only one in the area. Chipping and putting practice at the same time, there's a concept ....... hmmmmmm

    • Yes.  Did he not hit the range before the round? When my first few pre-round drives aren't what I expect, the first thing I check is my driver settings, in case they changed.  I am on my second adjustable driver and I am still not trusting that golf gremlins don't change it between rounds. The second thing I check is my alignment and setup, and that is far more often the culprit than my settings. In any case, there are some simple things that I imagine should be on a professional player's pre-round checklist that I am surprised when they aren't.  One of those is the settings for any adjustable clubs.
    • It was also set at B1 at a previous event, and… so there's dubiousness around whether he's telling the truth (again).
