Paint Fills

I bought a new bag and decided to repaint my Tommy Armour's to match.

I also filled the bottom groove on the face but left the degree marking unfilled. Thought it might be distracting at address.

What have y'all done to your clubs? Anybody else try painting their clubs? This is my first attempt, but I'm sure I'll be doing it again in the future. For $15 you can really give your clubs a fresh look.

That was my first set of irons. Maybe 21 years ago. Blast from the past.

Might have to dig mine out of the garage and go hit them just for old times sake.

the number on the sole is painted in white. the line under the 6 and 9 are filled in french blue. The white fill is a huge improvement over the straight black that was there before. I've hit a lot of new irons are demos but haven't found anything better than my Silver Scots. I love 'em.

I did a custom paint fill on my wedges a while back...

Changed the white lines around the "X" and the black circular lines around the number to red... simple but looks great...

When I did mine, I used some acetone and toothpicks to remove the old paint, Testors model paint (enamel) to do the actual paint fill, and once it dried a bit some more acetone to clean it up.

The paint was Testors enamel paint from a hobby store (Sublime Green, French Blue, White). The process went a little like this:

1. Clean clubs thoroughly

2. Soak in acetone (don't go over the hosel or the acetone will detach the head from the shaft/melt the ferrule)

3. Use a stiff brush, toothpick, anything with a sharp tip to remove all the paint

4. Overfill the area with paint and let it dry for 5-10 minutes

5. Wipe over the area with a paper towel dipped in acetone to remove the overfill (I cut up an old credit card to prevent the acetone from getting into the painted area and wrapped the paper towel around it)

Between colors I opened up the oven door a little bit, turned it on to 200 degrees and rested the heads on the door to expedite the drying. I used Scotch tape to tape over some areas to prevent getting paint into areas with different colors. Masking tape is just too thick for such an intricate design. After everything was painted, I left them on the oven door for an hour or so, then set them on a heating vent overnight. I used a nail polish sealer the next day after everything was dry, then wiped off the extra with acetone again.

I used a little paint brush I found at the hobby store next to the paint. They had little plastic handles about the width of a toothpick, but at the end they had a tiny-tiny brush. They came in a 10-pack and worked perfect.

craftsmanship looks good, sounds like you put some care into it...I guess I am not thrilled with the color combo...and matching your bag....I have to see a picture of the bag!!!   The best thing is,....they are YOURs not mine...enjoy your sticks

Recently just finished my irons....

And a Vokey I messed around with....

I'm in the process of doing my MP-60's right now, I'll post pics when they are done, but I'm trying a "clear green" paint to fill in the Mizuno portion of the club, and it's a little tricky to get the proper effect I want.

That was my set of first real irons back in 92.  They were retired in 2008 after 16 years by the Titleist 735s.  They were great clubs and I still have them in the Tommy Armour Staff bag!

I like the paint...I may have to experiment...hmmm...what colors?

the MP-60 with just the "clear green" fill....

Now the start of a white backing for the "clear green", really hoping that it will make the "clear green" finally pop and get that true translucent effect.

i thought the translucent effect was achieved by polishing the area to be filled?

Well that area of the club is pretty smooth already. The problem I had with the green was a "pooling" effect in the corners of the letters. I'm hoping the white will allow the green to show with a very light coat of green, thus eliminating the pooling effect.

Filling in the thin lines on the back of the FT insert was surprisingly easy. I thought the texture of the "tunite" would catch all sorts of wiped off paint but it was fine.  This was my first time paint-filling clubs too and I really enjoyed it.  I can't believe the difference in look on the VR wedges going from red/black to green/white!

How do you like the MP-60s I was looking at them the other day and cant stop thinking about them...

Went after my Scotty. I'd rather do 100 Vokeys than another Scotty to be honest. They're just a bitch in every way. Especially using 2 different colors. The front looks like so:

The pictures don't really show the transparency, but I think it looks pretty solid. Maybe a good 7/10 effort. Still gotta do the back O O O's. Wish me luck.
