I have the 08 Tour Burners and have thought about making a combo set using the Burner Plus and the 09 Tour Preferred Irons.  As of right now I have a larger gap between my 8i-7i and between my PW-GW and I don't hit my 5i and 4i as well as I would like.  So my thoughts were to use the Tour Preferred's for PW-8, Tour Burners for 7-6i, and the Burner Plus irons for my 5-4i's.  Any thoughts?  Obviously everything would have to be reshafted.

In a "traditional" combination is it just the PW-9i with the MB design or do they go with the 8i as well?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Many of the combo sets go to 8i for the muscle backs, and some go as far as the 7i

For example:  Nike VR Pro Combo goes to 8i for mb

Macgregor Pro C 7-PW are muscle backs

I sort of did the same thing with my set with MB to 9i.  Now that I am more comfortable with my swing changes, will likely go to 8i (currently looking on ebay for a Macgregor  8i MB +1")

It really depends on the manufacturer.  I think that 7-PW or 8-PW is the most common to be mb in a combo set.

I guess I should point out too that I've seen some of the custom pro combo sets (like those made of Titleist MB and CB irons) have cavities for the 3-5 irons and the 6-PW were muscle backs.

I think an 8-PW will be good for me.  There is a good amount of difference between the Tour Burners and the 09 TP's so I am curious to see if there will be any major discrepencies in distance once the shafts are matched up.

To reiterate cigar man, make sure that however you split your set the lofts and lengths are staged equally.  TM (and other) manufacturers are notorious for cooking the loft/length of GI irons to add distance, and I'll bet that the Tour Preferred and Burner Plus/Tour models won't provide consistent distance gaps as planned in your combo set.

Nike now offers the VR Pro Combo irons that mix pocket cavity (3-4), split cavity (5-7) and blade (8 on up).

The set up is similar to the Titleist 735.CB irons from 2005. Here's Titleist archive link, if you're interested:

great point D

to the OP, listen to this man, he is bang on

although the "idead" of a combo set works, ensure that the lengths, lofts and lie's work or can be adjusted slightly to make work

the irons should flow nicely between the sets

Most combo set spit at the 8i, some at the 7i. The reason for this b/c the more lofted a club the more forgiving it is. So, by the time you are up to the 8i and up you should be able to hit them in a mb w/o a whole lot of difficulty.

When you are putting a combo set together the most important thing is that the lofts are sequencial or you will be left with distance gaps between irons.

ive just ordered a 4,5,6 in an ap1! have a full set of ap2s but really struggled with the long sticks due to off centre hits so to sort this i ordered the ap1! hoping this will sort it, seemed like the perfect solution! also matched the shafts so there should be no problem
