Like the title says, I'm interested in those who play or are thinking about purchasing either Adams CB2, Taylormade Burner 2.0 or Titleist AP1 clubs. I've improved quite a bit over the year and I am ready for my first new set of irons. I will go get fitted for whatever clubs I go with...

Any insight is appreciated

I played the Titleist AP 1's for a month.  Great club, but the durability was an issue.  I exchanged  them for a set of Mizuno jpx 800 irons.  I find the mizuno's are a little more forgiving

and the feel a little better than the AP 1's.

The Adams CB2 look cool but I haven't hit them yet, they seem pricy for an Adams club.

TaylorMade's ad for the Burner is that they're better because they're long irons are made 1/2" over standard length, I play standard or 1/4" short so that doesn't sell me.

The AP1's I've hit and like I may be getting them.  I also liked hitting the JPX800's indoors but I haven't taken one out on the course yet.

bunkerville:  What was it about the AP1's durability that was an issue?

If you're already getting fitted don't worry about our opinions.

The 2.0's WILL be longer than the CB2's and AP1's I guarantee that.

Waiting out the 2 feet of snow that just dropped on the course....

Steroids for lofts.

The CB2's are more forgiving than they look. Check out the Adams A4 Forged line. Soft, forgiving, thinner topline, reduced offset and BEAUTIFUL(see my avatar). Although I lucked out and found a NIW satin 3-PW set (no hybrids) with TT Black Gold shafts.

A4's aren't really GI like the clubs he mentioned above are. They're basically player cavities. I don't think a 20 hcp should go anywhere near them.

dbwood,

The titleist ap 1's chrome seems to wear faster than most other irons.  I noticed a significant amount of scratches during the short amount of

time I played them.  They still performed well, but after only a few rounds and some range time, they were really beat-up.  To some this isn't an

issue, but I am particular about my equipment.

I was fitted for a new set of AP 1's and really like them.

Distance will not be like the Burner's but feel is excellent. Some of the better long irons I have hit.

Thank you, I hadn't heard that.  It's not a large factor to me but if everything else is equal, (it never is), then it could sway my decision.

Hm? Sounds like there's some folks talking up the Mizunos. I had never thought about those. I assumed they were for better players???

The 2.0 Burners are my 3rd choice as if I use a 7 iron I want a 7 iron not 6 iron distance. The AP1 seem cool but, I'm not liking the durability factor some have mentioned.

I'm leaning toward the Adams CB2 at this point.

Should I consider the Mizuno?

Thank you all for your responses!

The mizuno jpx 800 is in the exact same category as the AP 1s, Burner 2.0 and other game improvement irons.

It's a very forgiving club that hits the ball a long way, looks great, awesome feel and sound.  I play a stock setup in steel regular flex shaft which produces a medium-high ball flight.  I highly recommend this club.

I play with the burners,

yes they are 1/2 inc longer, but they are great, i gained around 5 - 7 yards per club as they are a little longer. The distance I didnt need but I have found my clubs over lap a little now and I am very happy with them.

They are durable they still look just as good now as they did when I purchased them a year ago, they are the 09 models, not the 2.0.

They are forgiving and everything I need in a club. If I ever change tham the Mizuno's is something i would look at.

The schoolteacher was taking her first golfing lesson. "Is the word spelt p-u-t or p-u-t-t?" she asked the instructor. "P-u-t-t is correct," he replied. "Put means to place a thing where you want it. Putt means merely a vain attempt to do the same thing."

My backup set is the 09 TM Burners and they are a great club.  Long distance irons for sure.  I'm not sure what the difference'

is between the 09 burners and the new 2.0, but I know you can pick up a set of the 09's for about $200 less.

The JPX800 has definitely got my attention. I spent the better part of last night researching them and I like what I hear. I can't believe they were never on my radar????

Well, that's what we are here for - helping a fellow golfer spend some money and dream big dreams!

Just for fun, I hit the jpx800s on the range this fall and was impressed with them.

I appreciated their feel - could appreciate it when I hit them in the center of the blade.

Also, they were pretty forgiving even off the toe.

I would personally go with the AP1's. I have yet to hit the 2.0's, but let me start by telling you this. Taylormade jacks these babies up. They are 1/2 inch longer and the lofts are a club longer. If you hitting a 7 iron, your really hitting a 6 iron. I personally feel that TM uses this to doop people into buying them thinking they hit them a mile. Trust me, the Burners are a great club, but it still bothers me that they jack them up and make you feel like you hit them a mile. The AP1's are a very good club, although I feel the top line is too thick and bulky, the 2.0's look better aesthetically to me. With that being said, Adams makes great stuff, but I think those are a bit pricey for Adams. I have not hit the Adams at all, but I have hit the AP1's and the original Burners quite a bit. It's all about looks and feel to me. The Burners look damn good, altough the black finish WILL wear off and look ugly and show every scratch. I may be a bit biased since I'm more of a Titleist guru myself, but don't discount all three of them, hit them all and take it from there. Hope this is worth your time reading.

Also, if you have put Mizuno in the mix, I would highly recommend them. Mizuno makes a GREAT club, and although I have not hit the JPX's, I have never found any club Mizuno makes, forged or game improvement, to lack feel and good looks. Mizuno's are going to be pricey, but they truly make good stuff! Fitting them is just as important too. Good luck shopping!

    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
