My Handicap index is/was 12.3, I have been playing what I thought to my handicap, shooting 82-84 on a slope index that says I should play at a 12, my home course gives me an index of 13 and I regularly shhot 85 or less.

If you look at the sreen shot of my GHIN page it shows my last 20 rounds, can someone please explain why my index has been put up to a 13.3? I just don't get it!!!

The rounds with an asterisk are your ten best. Your handicap is the average of the differentials for those ten best rounds, multipied by .96. That gives you your 13.3.

If it went up recently it's because some better rounds dropped off your last 20 (only the last 20 rounds are considered).

Yeah, check your differentials.  You only have a few that are in the 12-13 range. Most are in the 13-15 range.  If your best 10 of 20 scores average 83, and you play a course with a rating of 69.6 (slope is negligible), that's a handicap of 13.4, which is where you are.

The formula used is     ((score - course rating) x 113) / slope)  this is the differential, it is not rounded off, but everything past the 10th place is dropped...thus 13.775 is just 13.7.  The 10 lowest differentials are then averaged, and multiplied by 96%.      its important to realize that there is no rounding off of the numbers, they simply drop every past the 10th place.  When I calculate my own hdcp, if found this to change a few 10ths either way.          The hdcp formula  I got from a google search and while back, and confirmed this is what the AGA uses here in AZ.

Ok, thanks guys, so if you ad up all the differentials marked with an asterix they come to 138.6, time that by .096 it comes to 13.3056. So that's how it done.

My next question is how do they work out the differential? I thought if you were off of 12 as per USGA slope/hcp calculator and you shoot say 84 why is the differential more that you handcp?

While the slope is used to figure out your course handicap, the course rating is also factors into the differential (see the formula shown by AzGolfGeek ). Since all of your course ratings are below 72 it will add to your differential

Ok, so I get what your saying about the formula for the differentials, but if you work it out, to play to a 11-12 hcp on a 66.3/105 course I would have to shoot in the region of 77 or 78?

77 - 66.3 X 113 / 105 = 11.5

Like today, I shot 81 on 67/118 course, gives me 13.4 differential, if you work out my scores using the stableford system playing as a 12hdcp, I shot 3 shots under my hdcp.

Exactly - for myself shooting 100 at my home course is better than me shooting an 89 at another course I play

Let's see if my last few scores can confuse you even more:

Used T Date Score CR/Slope Diff.
* H 2/11 102 71.6/134 25.6
* A 2/11 84 65.7/118 17.5
* A 2/11 88 65.7/118 21.4
* H 2/11 99 71.6/134 23.1

Stableford is just an attempt to level a playing field when not everyone in a tournament has a GHIN handicap, it has no direct relation to your real handicap.
