Nice bikes. I've got a couple that are ancient compared to most of the ones in this thread. One is an early 1980's Motobecane Grand Jubile that should be a comfortable bike once I get to riding it. Nice job on the miles, you were close to a metric century.

Here's the ancient Moto

Nope, no cramping at night. And for as tired as I was after and thinking it would be some time before I try that route again, I think I'll tackle it again sooner then later.

treebound, you do any winter rides out there in WI? I was watching some cycling clips online and there was a race early in the season where there was snow on the ground! NUTS!

I had some studded tires that I used over a winter several years ago. Some of the early pre-season races can have ics for the earlier sessions. Dress right and it isn't tooo bad. Of course I preferred riding the winter better when I lived in California for awhile.

Avid cyclist here.  Just got back a month ago from a NYC to Joplin, Mo loaded tour to raise money for charity.  You can see where I went at www.cycleforjoplin.com and www.facebook.com/cycleforjoplin  I wore loudmouth golf shorts for virtually the entire trip!  They caught wind of what I was doing and they actually sent out a couple more pairs to me.  Really great guys!

This was a 20 day tour to raise money to build storm shelters and to commemorate the 1 year anniversary of the Tornado

Dave at Virginia Tech Cycle For Joplin Cycle for Joplin Dave at the start of the Blue Ridge Parkway Cycle for Joplin Dave and Todd arriving in Joplin Day 20!

This was my first loaded tour, normally I'm riding my road bike.  I don't race but I have a few friends who do and I do some aggressive training rides with them.  Average pace is usually around 23mph with 50-100 riders so definately benefitting from the draft.

Wow, nicely done on the tour.  I'm training for the Leadville 100 MTB race in August.  I'm an avid mountain biker, but don't care too much for road riding.  But I did get myself a nice road bike fitted well for me to train with, and have done a century ride about a month back as part of my training.  I do *not* care for group rides, though, so most of my riding is solo or with a single buddy, so we stay sub-20 average generally.  I'm also 6'2" and don't give a crap about getting very aero since I'm using it as a training tool, so that doesn't help the speed.

My regular long rides on the MTB are up in the 6 hour range now, so I feel like I'll be in good shape to finish Leadville, though I certainly won't be competitive.  But for that race, most of the 1700 competitors are really just trying to finish it.

Good stuff, I find most cyclists do have a prefferred element but often times MTB'ers like the raw speed of the road and road cyclists like the down and dirty MTB action.  For me, I would probably prefer MTB but since I live in NYC road cycling is really the only option.  bought a bike 2 years ago after blowing out my ACL and not having insurance to get it repaired.  I'm in the fitness biz and I have a client that has done Leadville, the ULTRAMARATHON which is absolutely crazy.  As for group rides, I don't really love them either but this particular one is essentially a race so it's all action and pretty experienced riders so relatively safe though some crashes do occur.

Yeah, I've got a buddy who is a hard core ultramarathoner.  The Leadville race has been his nemesis...failed to finish it twice, even though he's finished a BUNCH of other 100 mile races, including the Tahoe Rim Trail one and a couple others at decent altitude.  But Leadville is just a bit worse as far as being above 10k for basically the entire thing with some killer climbs to nearly 14k on that course (it's a different course than what we ride on the MTB, and while it's kind of similar, it's still worse).

And when I say that I don't like riding on the road much, believe me, no need to defend it.  If that's what you enjoy, or if that's just the closest thing to getting what you enjoy, it's all good.  I really want to see one of those criterium races up close...those dudes are every bit as crazy as the big world cup downhill guys!  You *will* crash in those, and it WILL hurt!

Sucks about the ACL, but glad you've found something you can do and enjoy as far as that goes, too.  I've had both my knees scoped for internal cartilage damage.  While the actual problem and repair wasn't NEARLY as involved as an ACL, both involved impact zones in the knee and thus required a full six month rehab before I was allowed to jump in any way again.  It was horrible.  I wasn't a cyclist then, so I have no idea how it would have affected that, but I'm sure it wouldn't have been good!

Just watched my first crit live last week, the Harlem skyscraper classic. It was NASCAR on bikes, just a .75mile lap around Marcus Garvey park in Harlem. The pro race was 60laos (50 miles) they averaged 33mph on dead flat ground. Race was over in an hour and a half!

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally have a photo of my bike.  Been back on it more - have a nice 70 miler planned for July 4th.  Great riding here in Western VA. though a little moderation in temp and humidity would be appreciated!  Not a great picture but I do like the bike!

I see your in Waynesboro!  Go hit the Blue Ridge Parkway.  Some of the hardest work you'll ever do but some great rewards!  I just rode through there 6 weeks ago on my way out to joplin, mo from NYC

That's great!

Makes me sad though, as I had to retire from cycling in 1998 when I shattered my left wrist while ice skating.  but before that, I rode about 300 miles per week, racing on the weekends.

1991, 1992 & 1993  completed the Cross Florida....170 miles in one day, from Cocoa Beach to Weeki Wachi.

Here's to you for getting on the Bike!

Here is mine; done some upgrades to her and love it! I wouldn't mind a new Roubaix frame though, that would be awesome. Unfortunately, I was involved in a car accident and haven't been able to ride, not to mention it's 108 degrees outside. can't wait to get back on it!

Haven't been on the Parkway this year but that is normally a regular part of our ride routes.  It's only about 6 miles from my house (a lot uphill to get there though!). Any you are right - a great place to ride.

    • Day 126 (18 Apr 24) - Trail arm only drill with the LW…focused on letting the club drop, engaging the bounce and letting the club pop the ball up….wrapped up by repeating drill with both hands on the club…
    • OPPs, I guess I have been doing the drill incorrectly, just ignore this.  But as they say, mistakes are learning opportunities. Let’s hope I can learn from mine.
    • Some thoughts after the 1st 9 holes of the year. The driver was pretty good, nothing crazy. My miss seems to be just a push. The start line is a bit too far right for my taste, but they are drawing back at least. Hitting middle-ish of the face to slightly toe. Part of the right miss is a bit of open face and off the toe slightly.  Irons, some really good strikes, others were not so good. I am feeling a few things, when I am being mindful of the swing I made.  1) Got to get the pause down again, and keep things shorter (as usual). One of the best iron shots was when I tried to mimic Rahm's swing length, lol. I caught a flier and hit an 8-iron like 190 yards into an area of no return for that golf ball. The swing felt great 😉  2) I got to stay taller in transition, feel like I gain tons of space between my hands and my chest. The bad swing is the old swing, bad right elbow, tilt to lower the club. This was too much shallowing, and hitting the ball fat. I just think of it this way, you are bent over, and you can reach the ball at address. So, you can reach the ball at impact by getting your hands down.  3) The final thing is the timing. It might take some time to get some flow into the swing. Timing up hands down and the turn is a bit off. Focusing on the hands down kind of stalls everything for me, at least it feels like my hips do not turn. I end up hitting a decent strike, just feels meh athletically, lol.  Short game was Ok, which means pretty good for not practicing it. Not short, but not round destroying.  Putting, doing much better now that I quickened up my routine. Line up, looking at my target. Glance down at the ball to get into my stance. Glance up at my target spot again, then hit the ball with in like 1-2 seconds after looking back down at the ball. Trying not to get to static over the ball while putting.
    • Oh I'm dumb, I just noticed I did the MyStrategy from the wrong tee box. I don't think it changes anything, though. I'll play it as a three shot hole and I still don't really want to miss right (guy I played with on Sunday never found his ball he hit just over the trees right). I think the trees left are considered part of the environmentally sensitive area because it's part of the drainage area for the course. I actually like this hole a lot. I'll try to remember to take a picture next time. I probably overestimated the wind speed. We had sustained winds of like 12-15mph with gusts up to 25mph. The wind is actually forecast to be WNW on Saturday instead of WSW like was when I played on Sunday so if I play this hole again the wind will be pushing towards that bunker. Similar speeds, though. Wind is always a factor at this course because there's really nothing blocking it. I'm definitely going to have to pay attention to it, especially with the wind. I hit a handful of short iron approaches a lot farther than I thought I would on Sunday. As of right now the only thing I know for sure is I'm starting on Ridge. I don't know if the back 9 will be played on Meadow or Lake.
    • Day 113: 4/18/24 Stack training progress check after finishing my 6th program, and 4th Full Speed Spectrum Training session, which is recommended for my next program.     Gained 1 mph with driver, 195 g, 95g. Maintained with 280 g , and gained 2 with 145 g. Lost 1 mph on both lead and trail arm. Felt like I lost distance in my last round…
