What's up, fellow golfers. I, like many of you, have the winter golf blues. I'm sick of the snow. I want my course back. *sigh*

In order to keep myself alive during this time without golf, I get involved in some other stuff around here (Utah). I have worked at the Sundance Film Festival for the past 3 years - and it's a blast! One of the things my co-workers and I always discuss is the best movie(s) of the year.

Since it seems the Forum is getting a little dead, I thought I'd ask what movies everyone liked this year. Any suggestions for the rest of us to go rent/see?

My top 5:

1. Casino Royale (awesome)
2. Apocalypto (insane action/chase flick with a real surprise ending)
3. Mission Impossible III (gotta love that bad guy - he did an awesome job - everyone hated him!)
4. The Illusionist (better than The Prestige, but same genre)
5. Thank You For Smoking (hilarious)

What do you all recommend/think?

On topic, I haven't seen a whole lot of movies this year, but I enjoyed X-Men, Pirates II, and Talladega Nights

I'm looking forward to see the Will Ferrell movie that is in theaters now shortly...Stranger Than Fiction...

I really want to go see Casino Royale also...but haven't been able to talk the wife into it yet. Still working on that one

I have a ten year old son so I don't get to see many regular movies. I did really like the movie "Cars". Last weekend I saw (against my will) "The Nativity" turned out it was great. Good movie to see at Christmas time.

I agree with Turlock's choice of 'Thank You for Smoking', which was indeed one of the best movies of the year. Unbelievably well done, original, and funny.

As for some of Turlock's other choices... I would not watch a Cruise or Gibson movie even if it meant I would drop 10 strokes off of my handicap. I just can't see supporting nut bags (check out Xenu.net for some insight on Scientology. Man they are crazy) or racists.

Pirates was a good, fun movie. Typical summer blockbuster fare but I enjoyed it. 'Talladega Nights' I saw last night and it was much better than I thought it would be (I was disappointed in Anchor Man). I have to admit I laughed quite a bit.

Biggest disappointment would have to be the X-Men sequel. Killing off major characters early so Halle Berry could get more screen time... pathetic!

But my favorite big movie of the year has to be 'V for Vendetta'. Officially released in '05 it didn't hit the theatres until March or so if I recall correctly.

Yeah I agree that they are a little off-kilter. But, after working around Hollywood types for a few years, I have to admit it would be hard to find any that weren't. Hollywood is full of weirdos, but if you choose your movies based on that criteria, you probably wouldn't see a movie all year! So, I try to base my movie selection on what looks good and what gets well reviewed (see

www.rottentomatoes.com for the best compilation of reviewers). I also have to disagree with Talladega Nights. I didn't think it was that funny at all. Conversely, I thought Anchorman was hilarious. Maybe it's because I saw it first. I have to agree with EatDrinkSleepGolf's choice of "The Departed". Awesome flick. All those guys did great jobs acting.

    • I can see a point in this.  If you play a straigth 3 footer with a square face aiming at the hole, you can miss both ways, with a close face or an open one. If you aim rigth an close the face at impact (like tiger used to do), physically you can still miss left or rigth but mentally you are only missing left (closed face) and having only 1 miss can give you a boost in confidence. I putt this way on fade putts and aim left and open the face on draw putts, never liked the uncerteinty of putting square to the target.  I apply something like this on approach shots, only use low or high shots and for middle shots I use a low shot with more loft ot a high shot with less loft. This shots are always what they meat low or high, a middle one can go a little towards the high and the low depending on the AoA of each shot making it mentally a little more uncertain what is going to be.
    • Yeah, I'm not sure if he is genuine or not either but that's not why I'm giving him props.
    • I really liked this videos.    I wonder about how to effitiently apply force to the handle of the club on the downswing.  Me personally used to apply force to the grip in the direction off the ball. I had a very steep angle of attack with my hands to the ball.  After looking at this videos I started to apply force downwards in the beginning of the backswing and then towards the flag/target when I was about to hit the ball.  After looking at pro players, they all start to lift their hands before hitting the ball. I don't know if it is because of pushing with their left leg up or because they apply force upwards to the grip when they reach the ball, or something else?
    • I'm pro BDC because of his scientific approach to golf, but I don't think he is been genuine since he started youtube and had this goal to be liked by all.    Congrats to scotty, yes is boring to watch a major when only 1 player is in contention, but the man is crushing it, he is making it look easy despite playing against the elite of golf.
