Hi,

I am looking for a new wedge for my bag. I was looking for a new 56 degree sand wedge. I have looked at vokey spin milled wedges for years however I have heard that the normal spin milled wedges are illegal in a competition (I am looking to play competitions soon)? I am looking for wedges that will stop the ball on the green as my current wedges are worn out and the ball rolling through the green is affecting my scores by at least 4 shots a round id guess.

What are the best wedges for feel and spin around at the moment? I have had a break from golf and I am quite out of touch with golf equipment these days!

Thanks

They are not illegal in the types of competitions you will be playing in. It is only in very high level events that you can't use them - for the next 15 years.

Consider Cleveland CG series of wedges.

  • CG15 slightly smaller, blade-type head
  • CG14 and 16 - slightly larger head, with touch of perimeter weighting, but still gets through rough nicely

If you can find them, also consider Callaway X-Forged. Callaway overall has a bit more bounce than I like, but the XForged 56.13 with C-Grind sole would be quite a club.

Focus, connect and follow through!

I just bought a Vokey SM 56.11 (the 2009 model, the last model before the new groove rule) on Friday after a considerable amount of comparison shopping. The CG15 and the Taylormade TP xFT were tempting second choices. I'd try to demo those if you're interested. The Callaway X-Series Jaws are also good, but I was put off by the rounded leading edge, which you won't be used to if you like the look of the Vokeys. I wouldn't worry about the groove rule. First, it applies to your irons as well so in order to be fully compliant you have to use new irons too. Second, it only applies to very high levels of play, which you probably aren't involved in if your handicap is 20. Just go for the wedges you like the best, and if you have the choice between grooves I'd recommend favoring the old grooves as it'll make your play from the rough a little easier.
