Hey guys,

I'm scheduled for a custom fit at Mzuno's fitting centre in the first week of January and I'm still undecided. Do I go for the MP-32, or the MP 60 variant?

I'll test both extensively during my visit, but does anyone here use them, or know anyone that does, and if so, are they reputable enough for a low handicap player?

Aesthetically, MP 32 are the sexiest irons available on the market in my opinion, but there's something strangely alluring about the 60s as well.

Any feedback would be appreciated guys,

Thanks

Hey guys,

jockstrap,

Both irons are fantastic looking and performing. With the MP-60 you will gain added height and forgiveness, especially in the long irons. With Mizuno it's easily possible to order a custom set in whichever combination you want, MP-32 in the PW-7 iron and MP-60 in 6-3 irons. Personally, I see no advantage to going with the 32's other than a penalized shot here and there and greater struggles on off days. You'll have no trouble controlling ball flight or moving the ball in either direction with the MP-60's, plus they will offer more forgiveness, so I don't see much point in getting the 32's. Since you're going to demo, pay attention to the fitters recommendations and pick the ones you like.

gascan,

Thanks for the advice, I had overlooked the possibility of combining the sets to suit my needs. My friend was custom fitted at Mizuno earlier this month and he says they are a great bunch, very patient and with great customer service.

Is combining two different sets common practice? I've used an off-rack set for years, and I'm worried I'll lose any consistency if they feel substantially different to each other.

gascan,

jockstrap,

That's a great observation, and you're right it is a very valid concern. I haven't seen you swing, and I'm not sure of what your tendencies are in terms of swing path, ball flight, and angle of attack. I will say that lofts and trajectories go well together, and any minor loft gaps can easily be solved by bending individual irons weak or strong. Both have thin soles and relatively low bounce numbers. I will say that the MP-32's have a shaper leading edge and will tend to dig a bit more than the 60's which have a rolled leading edge. Give them both a try, and keep the idea of a mixed set in mind when demoing.

With a HC of 5, you might want to try the new MP-67's. There's a bit of chatter in our clubhouse about them...word is that those new models are supposed to offer better workability for players who know how to shape their ball flight.

Regardless of what irons you choose, you're making a smart choice by going to get them custom fit. Enjoy the process

You might want to check out the MP-67. I went to the 67 from the 37. The ball flight on the 67 is higher than the 37 but the top line and feel are what made me switch. The 67's are like hitting a Ping Cast Iron in feel.

Thanks for all your advice guys, I'm really hyped for this fitting, I should have done it years ago.
I was reading an intersting article in a back issue of Todays Golfer, they tested various budget sets, but took along the MP 32 as a comparative indicator. They said...

As a spot of light relief, we also took along the new Mizuno MP-32 forged blades (RRP Β£599, as featured on page 111) for a preliminary hit before a more in-depth test at a later date. And after half a morning of smacking ProPowers and GV Tours the contrast was immediately obvious, whether you were doing the hitting or just watching. While the cheaper irons, even the ones we’d become fond of, sent the ball away with a sharp β€˜crack’, the sound of forged MP-32 on Surlyn was no louder than the snap of a cocktail stick.

Good luck... keep us posted on how you enjoyed the fitting (i dont think they use any launch monitors...at least not when I was there) and which irons you decided to go with. They have a beautiful facility!

I'm very jealous. I still have my old Pro-II's in the basement and am reluctant to part with them. I think gas_can's idea is very valid about a mixed set. It's amazing how many guys are doing that now...heck, you see manufacturers making sets that graduate from forged to cavity (Titleist).

Good luck and please report back once you have gone through your fitting!

Fairways and Greens.

A buddy of mine switched from MP-33 to MP-60 and it has paid dividends - he's hitting the ball much more consistently. Couldn't tell you about the 32's although they look sweet.

    • Feeling a tiny bit more upright, more width, and a slightly faster tempo. Still not enough confidence to bring a square face set up to the course but will get there one day. Interestingly, it didn't take this long to bring the driver square set up to the course. Its is like rehabbing my ankle all over again. Slow, painful and wanting for patience. I guess this is how you fill this bucket - one spoonful at a time.
