Okay well I have been working on my swing a lot lately, I was seeing a lot of improvement and shot my best round ever (99).  My last three rounds have been total nightmares and I have given up after 9 holes every time.

Even at the driving range almost 70% of my shots are being shanked to the right and I never use to do that before! This is driving me crazy, I can't figure out what I am doing wrong.  I have been to the driving range at least 4 or 5 times since it started and I just cant fix it.  Without seeing my swing any guesses on what I could be doing? I will try and get a video up on Friday but I felt the need to vent and post this now.

Could be something as simple as standing too close to the ball. Without video that'd be my guess.

Shanks

1) Standing to close

2) loosing toosh line, your butt gets closer to the ball, concentrate on your left hip going up and behind you and your right hip going down and aroudn you

3) severe over the top move

Usually these are accompanied by an open clubface as well.

Try this cure. Put a second ball down beside the one you are going to hit, about three inches away at a right angle to the target line:

o

←  o

Now swing at the first ball without hitting the second one.  (Sorry for the clumsy graphics.)

I have a severe shank/slice problem also and I am pretty sure I have all four of those problems you mentioned.  I was reading this and I after every one, I was saying to myself, "That sounds like me..."

well luckily all of these can be fixed.. I would go with the 2nd one first, because it can cause 1 and 2..

Yeah I think 1 and 2 are not mutually exclusive. If you're standing too close you're likely to loose your butt line during the swing to "correct" the problem and you'll shank it. Likewise if you lose your butt line in the swing you could end up too close to the ball and shank it.

I tend to stand at the point where I feel like I could topple forward if I don't stay balanced, e.g. balls of the feet. That tends to stop me from being too close to the ball and removes the butt problem too. :)
