Today me and some buddies went and played TPC of Louisiana, my driver game was incredible. I out drove all my playing partners and hit 11 of 14 fairways believe it or not, on the flipside of this round i literally only had 2 solid iron shots out of about 100 attempts. Every ball was hit either in the very back of the heel or topped. I almost threw every out away and just used my driver for every shot. I have no idea what I was doing wrong. Even my par 3 tee shots were terrible, we played 4 over par pick-up and i pretty much picked up every hole.....worst day ever!!!!...sorry, just needed to vent.

bro...that's the one common habit most weekend warriors fall into it. unless you practice 3 to 4 times a week one aspect of your game will falter.

i've had many rounds where i couldn't miss with my driver and my irons were inconsistent, and vice versa.

this has everything to do with not practicing.

you felt comfortable with your driver today right? you need to hit the range and feel confident and comfortable with the irons as well!

I try and go to the range at least once a week and I almost always play at least once a week. Going to the range and practicing off the mat just seems like a waste of time tho because it seems like almost every shot is a good one.

Learn the feel of a good shot. When I first started I would hit the range and feel like my iron shots were all good. On the course I hit every shot fat or chunked it completely. If you feel yourself hitting the matt first thats not good, learn the feel a crips struck pure shot and focus on that at the range not just whether or not the ball had good flight.

Check out my thread in the instruction sub forum.  A lot of good suggestions were made about how to practice on the mats.

    • We had a member of our senior club who developed a mental block on pulling the trigger. I played with him to see what the membership was talking about. I timed him a few times when he would get over the ball. 45 seconds. He knew he had a mental block and would chide himself, “Just hit it!” Once on the green he was okay and chipping was a bit better. It was painful to watch him struggle. Our “bandaid” was to put him in the last tournament  tee time with two understanding players. We should have suggested to him to take a break from our tournaments. I agree with the idea that when a player realizes they have a problem, the answer is to go fix it and not return until they are able to play at an acceptable pace.
