I wonder what's the lowest round ever by an amateur on the PGA Tour? Beacuse Cantlay might just be shooting it right now

Pretty cool stuff for Cantlay. Low amateur at the US Open, then shooting a 60 on tour to take a 4 stroke lead. He also just secured a start at the AT&T; next week.

I can't imagine being 19 and turning down all that cash!

During our live chat during the final round at Congressional, I said that Patrick Cantlay had the talent to make it on the PGA Tour right now. His performance so far confirms this opinion.

I haven't seen a course play this easy in ages. No wonder Cantlay shot 60. Might get a 59 this weekend!

Says it all really. The average PGA Tour course setup is.. not too taxing, shall we say, especially in recent years. Practically every course seems to be the same.. long and straight. No variety at all, unlike the European tour. And then Americans wonder why the Europeans are dominating Golf!

This kid is nuts if he doesn't turn pro after this weekend.   He has the opportunity to make tens of millions and finishing his degree at UCLA isn't going to contribute a penny to his earning potential.    People go to college to get the opportunity to earn more money, being educated and knowledgeable doesn't require a four year degree.

I have two bachelor's degrees and half of an MBA done and I'd trade it all to be a tour pro! :)

I wouldn't go that far with it. Considering there are two majors, a WGC event, and the FedEx Cup playoffs approaching - all tournaments Cantlay would not be exempt into - there aren't many opportunities for him to play on tour until the Fall Series. The US Amateur is coming up in August, and then the Walker Cup a few weeks after that. If I were in Cantlay's position, I'd stay amateur long enough to compete in those two events, then turn professional in time to make money in the Fall Series. If he wins this weekend, that's a different story, since he'd receive a two-year exemption and entry into Firestone and the PGA.

Hang on. Cantlay won't win tomorrow, but not because of where the leaders are; Jacobson and Molder have separated from the pack, but both of them have histories of fading on Sunday. The bigger problem is that one of the guys at 12-under is going to shoot 63 tomorrow, and Cantlay doesn't have a 62 left in him this week.

Very true. I don't know his history in the US Am, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind giving winning there a run!

On another note, lets go Jacobson!! I remember working the LA Open one year and I was assigned to his group. Ever since them I've had a soft spot for his game. He was quite and methodical, not flashy, but in a way that wasn't dull. Maybe its a Swede thing?

Cantlay was a semi-finalist at Chambers Bay last year. He lost his match to Peter Uihein, who went on the win the whole thing.

Now Jacobson, there's a guy who's hard to figure out. He doesn't have a great swing - his balance is atrocious - but he knows how to manipulate a shot, and he makes putts. He won three times in Europe back in 2003, and posted a lot of top tens that summer here in the States, prompting him to play over here full-time ever since. He hasn't won on the PGA Tour yet, but he's had a lot of close finishes. It would be nice to see him hold on tomorrow, but he'll have to make birdies early and often.
