When is it time to retire a wedge?

I am a 12 handicap and recently picked up 2 new BV spin milled wedges. Could not believe the action on my short shots. I thought it was me miss hitting the ball last 2 years. My present wedges where 3-4 years old. Is there some one out in the golf world that reconditions older wedges. I can't afford buying new wedges every 2 years.

There are places that can recondition wedges and irons, but it's usually fairly pricey for what your are after.

It may be worth checking out a groove sharper to breath new life into older grooves.

Evan, nothing compares to brand new BVs and the way they spin. Once you start using them a few times and break them in, they will calm down. When I first got my Vokeys they ate the covers off the balls. I immediately went to the bunkers to tame them.

Tour Spoon, isn't that what I am looking for ? That good bite on the ball. I work at a high end golf club and new prov's are not a problem no one dare go in the woods and high grass the dreaded TICK!

Well, I'm just saying the crazy spin will soon be lessened after a few weeks on those. Don't worry, they will still be great but you won't be picking pieces of balls out of the grooves, even range balls. If you find too many Pro Vs hook a brother up.

the edges of the grooves wear out over time especially on forged wedges.  If you play/practice a lot I find every 3-5 years they need to be replaced.  If you are going through them faster than that then get yourself a shag bag of soft cover balls because my guess is that you are hitting too many rocks on the range.

IMO brand new wedges spin too much, they are at their best after a few months of play.

I use my oldest wedges I own (vokey 200 series 56 and 60)  I like not having as much spin around the greens as it is easier (for me) to predict when I don't have to play for spin on short pitches and use trajectory to control the ball.  The spin looks neat for sure, but in function of scoring, its hard to count on.

Depends on how much you like the wedges. Recondition runs about $50 a club for irons.

Did any of you see the new Taylor Made removable insert for wedges? I heard they are about $40 to replace the face when they are tired. I am not going to switch but what a great idea.

i bought one, used it 3 times and gave it away because they have no feel at all to them. i wouldnt recommend them to a friend
