I am planning on taking a golf vacation this summer and could use some suggestions. I live near Olrando, FL and I need a place I can drive to within 10-12 hours. So far Myrtle Beach seems like the best solution but I'm open to suggestions.

- Inexpensive
- Fun for the whole family (wife & children)
- Average or better golf courses

Please tell me what courses I should look for in each area or provide a link to golf vacation packages.

Thanks for your help.

You can't go wrong in Myrtle, it's the golf capitol.
My favorite is the Legands! http://www.legendsgolf.com/
I'm thinking of a trip to Myrtle this year too. Thanks for starting this thread, it will help me out too. I've been to Myrtle 20 times since I was a kid but only had the chance to golf on 4-5 trips. I've always stayed in the southern part but I hear the north is much nicer and closer to all the restuarants and attractions. I haven't been in 8 yrs so I'm sure it has changed a lot.
Let me know how your trip goes.

Thank you very much for the link. This is exactly what I was looking for.

TPC is one of the best courses in Myrtle Beach? How do these courses rank compared to the other courses there?

My family and I really enjoyed Hilton Head. It is about four hours closer to Orlando as well. We stayed at one of the resorts, Palmetto Dunes, and my family did their thing while I played golf.

Based on that other thread I was thinking about looking into the following courses.

- Barefoot (which one?)
- Caledonia
- TPC (greens in good shape?)
- World Tour
- True Blue
- The Masters

I have not researched these much so I could have just named courses that area 100 miles apart. I have no idea. I was hoping to play the TPC course but it sounds like it was in rough shape and overpriced. Is it safe to assume that has been fixed or will be by this summer?

I am just starting this process so I don't even know what month I'll be going for sure. Any suggestions on the best value? Any time I should avoid?

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Based on that other thread I was thinking about looking into the following courses.

alockrem: First things first - The Masters is a strip club so don't look for an address or website

Secondly, all the courses on your list are defined as "premium" Myrtle Beach courses. What that means is that you could be paying an additional $50-$120 extra to play that course. It's unlikely they would be included in a "3-day package with golf for $200". If you get a package, it may make sense to play a mix of regular courses (free) and some premium courses (surcharge applies). Regarding TPC, I would call them a month or two in advance to ask if their greens are fixed - they were atrocious in Nov 2006. Regarding time of the year, I have heard that early spring and late fall are the busy times. Summer is generally slow, because it's mostly families. Can someone who is a Myrtle regular confirm this? Hope that helps...

All the Legends courses are first class! Loved the Links style course.
Also, if your taking the family, the putt putt courses are the best in the world!
Take the wife to Barefoot Landings (shopping) you'll thank me for this advice later!

There's a great inexpensive course on the south side of Myrtle called Indigo Creek. It's not a very tough course, but scenic with water and sand. Not one hole is alike.

Hey all, seeing how i live in Myrtle beach, Let me be your tour guide. First off, if you are looking to pay high greens fees, then you can play the Barefoot courses, Grande Dunes, World Tour, Wild Wing Plantation. The Legends. All great courses, but you are going to shell out some money to play there in our "golf season". If you are looking to play good courses here are some. Arrowhead Country Club, The Witch, The Wizard, Man-O-War, Wicked Stick, Shafteberry Glen. Thats just to name a few. All the above courses are great. You wont go wrong with any other them. I guess iam kinda bias, because i live on Arrowhead Country Club. Best course there is. As for the TPC course, i havent played there in a couple years. Hopefully that will help some, if not please feel free to leave me a message.

If you are looking for golf packages, you can contact Myrtle beach Golf Holiday. Iam not really sure how much help they would be, but its a start. And if you are here on vacation, you should be able to get in touch with the golf desk at any of the hotels and they will be able to set up tee times for you. You might want to call ahead on that one, if you have a large group or whatever. Either MB golf holiday or the golf desk at the hotel where you are staying would be the way to go.

we've stayed in MB several times for golf... Litchfield was a joke...Pawleys Plantaion was awesome,as weresome of the others' mentioned previously. we always went in late summer, as it's HOT, and the courses are/were vacant after 12 noon...I do mean HOT,too, but being raised making hay on a farm, it was nuthin'!! and cheap green fees then, too!

Posted
Well iam not sure why you think that litchfield was a joke, that is one of the better courses here, i guess that the fact that DL 3 has a house on that courses doesnt mean anything. LOL As for the summer heat, yeah its not fun to play here in the summer time, after 12 noon the courses are wide open. But you are going to take a beating from the heat. But if you want the good rates and fast play, the summer is the way to go.

Here is a link to a Feb. 14 article about TPC --

http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld...f/16694096.htm -- this might provide you with some useful information about TPC. According to the article, TPC is tentatively sked to close down June 11 for at least a couple of months while new greens (new type of grass) are put in.

Posted
Thank you for the article. I will obviously take that into consideration when scheduling my trip.

I just played golf with someone that has a vacation home on Pawley's Island (I think that's what it's called). He highly recommended that area for golf. He mentioned a few courses but True Blue is the only one I remember.

I live in central Florida so summer heat in SC shouldn't be a problem. I know it will be hot but that's what I have to put up with 10 months out of the year down here.
