I believe I hit my irons like a 4-5 handicap golfer, drive the ball like a 5-6 handicap golfer, and putt like an 18 handicap golfer. Somewhere in that ugly equation is a 10-11 handicap golfer.

Summary -
Driver / 3-Wood: 6 handicap
Irons: 5 handicap
Putter: 18 handicap
Actual: 11 handicap

Wow, what a great chart! It really puts things in perspective, plus gives me some goals to shoot for. I never fully knew where I was losing strokes on the whole until I compared those numbers to what I typically do.

I fit between bogey golf and average golf. My putts and penalties are lower than the number, but my up and down percentage is about right (assuming I actually have a chance at an up and down for par).

Great stuff!

That is a great chart. Thanks for sharing that. I am on the edge but with a little work on my short game I should be an avid golfer. I putt like a bogey golfer.

Good chart. After taking a quick look at the stats I have kept over the last year I fit in the low handicap group in most every category. I do not keep my sand save percentage so I have no idea there. My GIR is 64% so at the high end but my up and down percentage is at 49%. I have very few penalty strokes when I play so I have to be lower than .8 a round. Also, I average 32.3 putts a round so I am close there as well. Seeing this reminds me why I am working on my short game so hard.

That is the exact reason I started thinking about it. If the rest of my game is playing as a 4-6 handicap then I know what I need to work on. I also don't record my sand saves, but I would guess my % is closer to 25%.

Interesting that there is no category for Driving.

No question accurate, long drives in the fairway directly affect the ease of getting your GIR percentage up, but, if you can hit greens from anywhere you drive the ball, driving is not so vital!

Interesting that there is no category for Driving.

I just read an article that showed a chart of Tiger's stats for the last 5 or 6 years and even though he is not even close in the driving accuracy, he is almost at the top of all the other categories. That tells me that if you can hit it long, you don't have to get it in the fairway as long as you are not blocked to the green. Hitting approaches from the rough doesn't seem to change the GIR's that much for the big hitters. Perhaps the problem with us is our bad drives are short

AND in unrecoverable positions??? That is a costly combination to your score.

I had to print it out. Using the chart as a reference my GIR is low, my putting good, my up and down % ok, my sand save % awful. I attribute the non sand stats to my lack of length, hitting a 7wood and sometimes a 4 wood into a par 4 is tough and I have to do this several times a round. Still I could jus improve my chipping and sand play a little with even slight improvement in my long game drop to maybe a 12.

^thats how you build a single digit handicap.. If you have a brain that sokes up everthing you see visually.. just watch lots of golf, look at what the pros are doing. Watch instructional programs on the golf channel and mimick their actions. They didnt get that way by chance. Once you learn how to play bogey golf. eventually you will offset one here and there with a par or a birdie. eliminating the doubles and tripples is the key. that said judging from the chart i would rate myself in between low and avid. My biggest trouble being inconsistancy. I dont make big numbers, but i do have the tendancy to pull a lot of shots with the driver when im struggling which results in missed greens and having to make all world up and downs. If im driving the ball straight i'll shoot mid-low seventies almost gauranteed.

I rate my driving as single digit
Irate my iron play as 14-16
My short game as 10-11
putting as 10-11
I am really trying to improve my iron play as it tends to put to much pressure on my short game.Missing greens after splitting the fairway is soooooo depressing

I think if there was one thing that I would want to eliminate from my game it would be "blow up holes." Now that probably attributes to a mental part of the game for me....
