The time I played with the Lama (big hitter, the Lama) , I was good for around 275 carry, but that was in the Himalayas. At sea level I can fly it 250 with a (really) strong breeze at my back. With the same wind in my mug, I'm good for about 125.

What's in the bag?

this is by far the best notion of "how far a five iron can/should be struck"!!! I think many golfers forget that after finishing a hole there's a number to be written down. That's the number of strokes one needed to hole the ball, not the club used for a particular distance!

I'm about 190, but I am not even using it that much anymore. My 3 hybrid is so versatile I will hit it off the tee on some 4's and 5's and can put it out there 225+. I also use it on par threes from 175 and up depending on the conditions.

The only other club I have with a spread in distance of 50+ yards is my driver and that is usually not by choice.

It's very surprising that a lot of the posters hit their 5 irons as far as PGA tour players despite playing off handicaps above 10! I just had a quick look through the "What's In My Bag" archive at golfdigest.com and noted down some of the distances these guys have down for their 5 irons. Are we all telling the truth?

Great point. It think what most people are saying is what they expect to hit a 5 Iron. When I get over the ball I expect it to go about 180-185 off the grass and 185-190 off the tee. I can hit it over 200 when I pure it. At the same time I can also hit it 150 when I put a bad bad swing on it.

Right you are Chingali! BUT!!!

I would like to know what the LOFT of the tour players irons are. The club manufacturers have been moving the average amature golf set in the direction of stronger, and stronger lofts over recent years. I would guess the average tour pro is still playing "true loft" on their five iron whereas the average amature is playing a few degrees stronger loft on theirs. Bend a 7 iron to 5 iron loft, and it may well go 185 too.

When I hit it solid, my 5-iron will travel 215 yards no roll. Though, with a 16 handicap, I often have to go into the trees to determine just how far the ball traveled. I can also attest that the brand of club you play with as an amateur has virtually no bearing on how well you will play. I have played with every level of club imaginable. I am now playing with a set of irons I bought from a guy here in Panama for $50. They are called King Snake, and are knock offs of King Cobra and they are over 10 years old. I consistently hit the green on the from our Par 4 241 yard Hole 4 with my 3-iron.

I hit my 5 iron 190 yards, and I'm happy with that!

Laws of golf :
LAW 3: Brand new golf balls are water-magnetic. Though this cannot be proven in the lab, it is a known fact that the more expensive the golf ball, the greater its attraction to water.

LAW 8: Topping a 3-iron is the most painful torture known to man.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
