I have a strong grip at the moment, i hit it well but occasionally hit a bad hook

I have a lesson this afternoon and i know he is going to tell me to weaken my grip.

The thing is, when i weaken my grip, on my backswing it feels so.... 'weak' (lol). And i can feel the clubface opening lots, and it sort of turns everything that ive learned so far on its head.

Any tips on how to adjust?

Thanks

need a video, and more description of the hook, does it start straight then hook? or just dead hook? or go right then hook/draw back?

I hit a 5-10 draw naturally. But my bad shot with a driver varies from an out and out snap hook to a 50 yard hook.

As much as I like to say "there's little commonality in the grips of the best players," and there isn't, the thing is it boils down to clubface control, which has commonalities because it is important.

If I were you I might slightly weaken my grip and see what you can do with that. If you can't learn to - from a strong grip, mind you - "hold off" the clubface to hit the draws that don't start too far left, then you may very well have to change the grip slightly.

Or, learn clubface control with the grip you have. Think Zach Johnson. Draws virtually everything, strong grip, "holds it off" a little.

Feel isn't real so I'd lean towards learning to accept that what feels weaker is a better position. If you never fear the clubface pointing too far left, imagine how much more you can rip at the ball.

what do you mean by holding it off, do you mean the follow through or the clubface at impact?

Well, with out looking at your grip, i think the reason it feels weak in the backswing is because his getting the club more in your fingers, and out of the palm. I use to have a weak grip, not neutral. I switched to a stronger grip, i could hardly take the club back the first few times, it felt like i had not grip on the club. Thats going from a weak to the strong, it was because i was gripping the club more in my fingers of my right hand now. Position of the club in the hand has nothing to do with weak or strong, only what side the thumbs are relative to the top of the golf grip.

What worked for me when I weakened my grip last year was to set my wrists early in the back swing.  Not sure it is for everyone but I do it.
