Had my first lesson today. A lot of fun to see yourself on the video analysis etc. I was looking for some thoughts on lag. Everything I've seen online always talks about your hands leading your club head into iron shots. What I liked about that was that there was a larger area of the swing that made a solid contact. The first thing this guy said was to never watch online instruction (because that costs instructors money?) so I shut up about watching a million YouTube videos. His swing had my hands over the ball at impact. It all worked very nicely (combined with other corrections) but I felt like there was less room for error this way? Also from other sports I had been leading my arms with my hips. He got me to not do that. Does this seem right. The swing just feels less athletic now. thank you and sorry for any spelling or grammar errors or if I've said something that makes you want to attack me.

There is a certain grain of truth with watching online instruction, 1 its not tailored towards you, its generic information. 2 its can be sensorty overload of information, and then your trying to mix match so much stuff you end up like Charles Barkley.

All the best golf swings are lead by the hips. Now there is something to be said with being to hip focuses. Nick Price tried to be like Jack alot, but his hips were all over the place and he couldn't hit anything consistantly. This is my bad habit, i get way to fast with the hips, really drive them hard, but i end up comming out of my shots. If i concentrate on returning my hands infront of the ball before i strike the ball, i end up doing good. I never really concentrate on my lower body at all, its pretty much going to go were it wants to ;b

Now some people tend to arm swing only, so they might need to focus on there hips more. It depends on the person. But i will say his concept of hips not leading the arms is wrong. The hips will always be ahead of the arms, and that core rotation will bring power and consistancy.

One of the few significant and lasting improvements ive made with my swing was realizing that my hips had to anticipate the dynamic move of leading my arms through the transition. Once I fully committed to this concept I worked to develop a good sense of timing. The hips leading the arms through the transition is where I create tje feeling of lag. If I fail to create this lag than my swing lacks power. So, practicing a swing that does not have the hipz leading the arms doesnt make sense to me.

Well, the online instruction argument is a double edged sword. If you are person who does not care why things work, like why does it matter if my hands lead my clubhead? Then I completely agree with his comments. Don't look it will only confuse you.

I am someone who wants to know why something works. Why should my hands lead the clubhead? Then I say youtube yourself to your hearts delight. Dig around, ask questions here, there are no stupid questions. Learn about the ball flight laws, learn about the different teachers methods and why they think their swing is the best.

To me golf is a journey. Enjoy it.

    • That’s totally fair. I have my chipping issues which make my putter more playable in that situation. Really just confirming that while not optimal there comes a point where if you need to use a putter (for whatever reason) then the optimal mechanics breaks down. I know I’m a sample of one. 😂
    • Day 329 - 2025-08-26 Hit 24 balls before lessons and JEP Summer Session. With the MP-33. 🙂 Put an undersized grip on my VR Pro accidentally.
    • Well, that's not really a putt at that point. You could easily choose to putt that up the slope with a hybrid or something.
    • Day 15 (August 26).  I missed practice yesterday, but otherwise had a 14-day streak going into it.  Somehow, some of my posts for this appear in my profile but I can't seem to see them (I hope I didn't break any rules that would cause them to be removed).  I am hoping I'll be able to keep doing some practice while I'm out to regain the red text.  Context:  am on vacation, this week with friends.  What was today's actual practice? Today, a friend and I decided to go to TopGolf;  it was kind of like being at the range with someone else's clubs.  And that's ultimately how I was able to use it for practice:  I don't practice choosing a target, lining up to it, and then hitting often enough;  that's what this place seems to be about.  In any case, we were there for 90 minutes, I was hitting for maybe 35-40 minutes of that time, and I did pick a target each time.
    • Day 2 - (26 Aug 25) - Church men’s golf nine hole Captains choice.  Had grandson as part of our group - was a blast watching him drill the putts.  Love these no pressure sessions - great for going outside the norm on club selection.
