Know your ball contact on the clubhead for 75 cents, lasts forever

I never found a cheap solution to get ball contact on the clubhead until recently.

Those things you tape onto your clubhead are expensive and awkward. Spray is expensive and isn't great for the environment. Both are about $5-10 for only a couple of range sessions.

I also tried baby powder, lipstick and duct tape. This is way better, lasts forever.

I got a black piece for 75 cents from an art store and it works in wet conditions too if you spread it on thick. Because it's a little oily, it sticks.

Just make a dime sized blot on the bottom half of the ball and use a wet towel you don't mind getting black stains on to wash off the clubhead.

I've wondered about this before.  Wouldn't it affect the ball flight/spin?

The idea is to see what your contact with the club is like rather than ball flight I think.

Nice idea. I normally use masking tape (not sure what it's called in the US) - Apply it lightly enough that it sticks and the ball makes a clear mark where it makes contact.

Good point.  I suppose you'd really only use this on the range.  Great idea, I might have to go get some.

Still called masking tape over here.

I keep a blue dry erase marker in my bag.  Color the face then smack a ball.  Pretty little dimple marks are then made on the face.  Wipes clean, not oily, and not permanent.

I take a sharpie and mark the center of the ball with a black line (same as you would mark a ball to line up putts). If I hit the ball correctly, I have a vertical line in the middle of the club at a 90 degree angle. I get immediate feedback if I am striking the sweet spot and if I'm at the right distance from the ball. If I'm too close, the mark angle is toward me...too far mark angle is away.

    • Day 1 (19 Jan 26) - after a week lay-off due to travels, felt great to get in some drills in the backyard today.  Started with lead arm only short pitches focused on squared face and light divot post ball.  Haven’t done this in a while and it showed, with some skulls and slices.  Settled into easy flighted balls - wrapped up with standard two handed swings.  Good restart to the daily drills.

    • Day 19, 1/19.  Finished work in time to spend 25 minutes hitting balls (hit 15) indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Usual focus.
    • Day 30 - 2026-01-19 Got 10 minutes in on the mat / net working on exagerrating movements I'm working on. And grip. Also worked with my friendly AI to summarize key negative tendencies I have so that I can build a personal checklist to follow. Will do more mirror work tonight.
