I am putting off upgrading to Lion from Snow Leopard. I have a late 2009 Macbook Pro. Which would you recommend?

Upgrade to Lion, then iOS 5.

or

Upgrade to iOS 5, then Lion.

Not interested in using iCloud immediately, maybe in a month or so. I'm a little more inclined to upgrade to Lion now that the second update is available, but the main reasons I haven't upgraded to Lion yet is battery life and wifi dropouts.

Thanks in advance.

iOS 5 is only for the iphone and ipad.  The Lion software is for the notebooks and the Mac personal computer.  You do need Lion however in order to correctly run icloud.  And since you didn't care about icloud I would just update to Lion.

I can't answer your iPhone-related question, but I haven't seen much (if any) of a difference in battery life since switching to Lion, and my wifi has actually been better (though Safari has been worse). [quote name="Aquaguru" url="/t/53786/ios-5-question-for-apple-experts#post_653722"]

Yes I know and I couldn't tell if he was sure by his decription.

I can speak for ios5 has I just upgraded to it last night and I love it.  The pull down home screen is amazing as well as going pulling notifications straight from the lock screen (ie. texts, alerts).

I'm currently in the process of upgrading all the way up to Lion from 10.5.8 (Tiger), a very old software.  I have to upgrade to snow leopard first then to lion.  I think I can't skip leopard.  Once I get there I will let you know how I like it.  I have used Lion and can say the interface is much better than what I have now.

Thanks Aquaguru - I'm going to upgrade an iPhone 4 and an iPad, just debating whether I should do Lion beforehand.

Jamo - what kind of machine do you have running on Lion? Many people are complaining about battery life after they upgraded to Lion, even after the 10.7.2 update.

I've got an early 2011 MacBook Pro (15 in, 2.0 Ghz i7, 4 GB ram, etc.). My battery life isn't particularly great, but it was the same with Snow Leopard. I just installed the 10.7.2 update today and haven't used it without the power plug, so I don't really know if that has changed anything. FWIW I've been generally pleased with Lion. There are a few annoyances (Safari, like I mentioned, a few scroll bar things, and I don't really like the Resume feature, Word '08 is terribly glitchy (but that's my fault for using it)), but I like Mission Control, I like the new Mail, and I like begin able to resize windows from any edge. Well worth the $30, definitely (or it would have been, I bought mine after they revealed it in June but before the launch in July, so the upgrade was free).

I vote for Lion and then iOS 5. Get set up on iCloud right away (even if you don't really actively "use" it), then the iPhone upgrade will be a little bit smoother.

Not a lot, though. The two installs take about the same amount of time, though. It's typically best to have the latest desktop OS and iTunes for the last iOS upgrade you'll have to do while physically tethered.

I wrote this entire message with Siri, btw. Woo! :-)

Ah, ok. I have an older 13 " MBP. My battery life is still decent, about 4 hours, which is good for for the 2009 model, the newer models have longer battery life.

OK,  I guess I can rollback if the battery life is no good.

When you setup iCloud, can you tell it not to sync your music? I don't have enough space for music. Or if you do, can you opt to select which songs to download?

Erik, did you say to Siri - I want to kill myself.

I generally really like Siri but the following is a (teeny tiny) bit annoying...

Like, VERY annoying.

Fingers crossed Apple will add other countries at a later date else it's Siri-ously gimped.

Looks like they're adding UK support in 2012. http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/10/14/siri_functionality_limited_outside_us_but_apple_promises_updates_in_2012.html

Every now and then I realise how much I moan about all the good stuff being US-centric. Then shortly afterward I stop moaning as I realise it will eventually make it's was this side of the pond.

This morning I'm full of moan. ;)

Jamo,

Did you know about the lawsuit regarding the 2011 mbp battery?

http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/1382-apple-macbook-pro-defective-battery-class-action-lawsuit-

Don't know if that is any help, but it might explain your battery life issues. Battery life is one of my biggest must haves for a laptop and usually Apple is very good in this regard.

I hadn't seen that, and since I wouldn't call by battery life poor, I certainly don't get 7 hours, and seriously doubt I would even if I turned wifi off and the screen brightness all that way down, so filled it out. We'll see how it goes, thanks.
