On how to close the club face, Erik said:

Well, maybe threejack doesn't need it, but I'm interested in what you'd say.  I noted in another thread the other day that while it may be true that the vast majority of amateur slices come from an out-to-in swing plane, and not a failure to close the face, that my slices almost all start right, and 100% start right with everything but my driver, where misses tend to be straight pushes with everything but the scoring irons.  My slight misses tend to be straight pushes towards the right side of the green, and my big misses start at that same spot and fade/slice.  Which is just a long way of saying that I believe my big misses come more from not getting the face closed, rather than coming OTT.

My current beliefs about why that happens is that I tend to cup the wrist at the start of my down swing and drop my hands too far inside while pushing my hips too far towards the ball, rather than mostly sliding them down the target line.  When I try to just not do those things though, I tend to swing more rotational and come over the top while getting the club face closed and hit straight pulls with my shorter irons and pull draws to pull hooks with my longer irons.  Any recommended fixes?

No offense intended mdl, but I'd prefer not to threadjack threejack's thread. ;-)

Please start your own thread or wait a little bit for a video I'd like to make.

Nice.  Fair enough.  I'm too often guilty of the attempted threadjack...

I think I'll forgo the sort of free-form swing help thread with no video.  I've been doing a lot of work on the swing lately and have been taking video fairly regularly.  I'll just make a video and start my own thread soon.

Looking forward to your video.  And the net-hitting practice article as well.

Good point. I'm not a fan of two things in the video.

  1. His head going forward. I'd agree that your lower center goes forward, and that actually helps to shallow the hit, but if your head goes forward you're right: you can get an AoA too steep and lose power and hit high-spin shots.
  2. He gets into more of a "punch elbow" position than I'd prefer to see when he quickly re-establishes the "right arm on top." More people are better going slightly more pitch elbow here. Punch can work for some, just not the majority.

But on point #1, it's important to note that his head moves backwards during the backswing, so his "head going forward" really just re-centers it. Then he talks about - at the end of the video - his hips continuing to push forward and up. So again, point #1 must be taken in context.

Point #2 remains, though:

Ya, thanks for clarifying. Moving my lower center while keeping my upper center back has helped a lot already. I also found that my shoulders hang back and my swing is finished with my hands causing me to flip and hit it OTT

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
