during the backswing do you personally let the club pretty much come to a stop before starting your downswing...or do you actually your downswing before your club has stopped moving back ?

Everyone, including one instructor I talked to, talks about this 'coiling' thing and some videos I watched it was easy to see that the person started the down swing before the club had stopped moving back, so Im wondering if that is what is meant by this 'coiling' thing.

Also....how far is 'too far' in a backswing?

I can often see my clubhead and about half the shaft out of my left eye and I think I read that is way too far. Granted I have an extremely wide field of vision, but my head at address is aimed slightly away from the target, so it does seem a bit too far back.

If it is too far back could that account for getting lots of great shots when I do get a good strike, but not being entirely consistent because of having to get the club that far back around?

Thanks in advance.

No, my hips start there slide before my swing switches direction at the top. But my club never stops, there is no pause.

Coiling is basically having more shoulder turn than hip turn. Starting your downswing with the hips first increases this angle because now you go from lets say 90/45 (shoulder/hip), to 90/30, so now you effectively created 60 degrees of seperation instead of 45 degrees of seperation. That is coil.

You should not see the club at all, unless your hands don't get high enough and parallel is near your shoulders. Believe me there is a golfer i play with who basically rests the club on his shoulder. He has one of the most fluid swing i have seen. Is pound for pound the longest hitter out there. The guy is like 5'8, probaly a buck fifty, and can hits it 230-240 consistantly, Its crazy.  But he might be able to see the club. But if your hands get above your eye level in at the top, you shouldn't be able to see the club.

What you might want to do, is swing infront of the mirror, and stop were the club gets parallel at the top. You might find that your shoulder rotation might seem shorter as well, which is my case. I basically don't think about my hands, i think about my rotation. The hands will get to the top, if i overrotate my shoulders then it gives more time for my hands to travel more.

For me its rotate shoulders back, my hips just go with the motion. Then i feel my correct rotation, then i just fire through with a ton of acceleration. Basically firing through starts with my hips, though i don't concentrate on that. I just think of unwinding my core, bringing my center chest line to the target by rotating. I got overactive hips, so i can't use that as thought process. So for me, its

Shoulder rotate back, feel the stretch in my left lat and contract in my right lat. Then its belly rotate towards the target,

I used to and I'm going to work on making it part of my rhythm again. I swing much better that way.

    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.

    • A hair under 190. It was pretty downhill, though, so I think we were playing between 180-185 to the pin. My 6 iron went 187 according to shot scope and ended up 18 feet away.
    • That's a tough pin on 14 at TR, had to make the hole play much longer, how far was that shot? I've only played that hole with a front pin.
