Downswing, Hips turning instead of weight shifting from back to front foot

Hey everyone, just wondering if someone has some drills to do for my downswing.  I really need to work on pulling my hands down and NOT allowing my hips to leak open.  Need to get the weight shifting from back foot to front foot.  When I leak my hips it causes me to cast my hands out and come around the ball with the clubface open.  Divots point 25-35 degrees left of my target.  I'm getting lessons and I really want to work on this before my next lesson.

Sounds like you need to get the hips sliding forward to move low point, where the club bottoms out, more forward.  If the hips don't move forward the path will be too far across the ball.  This is a drill I like, setting up with the right foot banked or rolled forward onto the instep.  I keep it banked even on the followthrough to exaggerate the feeling of getting the hips forward and extending the arms.

You'll note rolling the foot forward controls how much my hips are turning and they are staying closed longer.

Another thing you might want to try to feel is not getting your weight on your back foot as much. Not sure how much you do, but if its hard to get forward and it throws you off, then your probably have to much lateral shift right in the backswing. Which can be caused bye mentally moving to the right foot, or over rotating, which drags the upper body back. Try to feel like your hands get a bit deeper, and just rotating the shoulders. Don't worry about getting the weight back. See if that helps out.

I agree with the poster who said that you may not need to shift so much weight to the right on the backswing.

The problem you describe is one I've battled for several years until an instructor this year gave me a fairly easy fix.

Basically, I address the ball with my hips slightly tilted left with my belt buckle facing slightly right of center.  I keep my weight roughlty 60/40 left/right during the backswing, and MOST IMPORTANTLY I keep my legs fairly quiet during the backswing.  I try not to let my legs twist much.  I definitely do not let the knee of my right leg rotate right.  I twist at the waist, which combined with a lower body that is not twisting, creates tension in the torso.  I release this tension and transfer the remaining weight to my left leg during the downswing.  My abs are sore after a day at the range.


No longer swinging with my arms, this has cured my slicing and has helped immeasurably with my consistency.

I'm now working on maintaining additional lag in my wrists for distance which is working so much better now that the rest of my swing is sound.

I'm working on this as well.  Just tagging.

I will say the best advice I've got from a pro so far has been drop and go.  It's still challenging to get it in the slot consistently and not dip a shoulder.

Yeah it's becoming a difficult habit to break.  The hardest part is just visualizing myself dropping my hands down.  I can feel myself becoming much better at it, but I am sometimes pulling the ball way left (right handed golfer) because I am trying to over correct it so much.

Yeah, that is me.  Although, I'll take that inconsistency and seeing more consistent shots from really working on dropping and gaining tons of distance.
