I have been struggling with hybrids horribly. I hit my 4 iron pretty good though. I have been wanting to hit my hybrids though to get a little more distance. Every thing I have read says hit it like a 7 iron. This was no good to me. Then yesterday I was on the range hitting my 4 iron and decided to try my hybrids again. I went to the car and got my 3 and 4 hybrid. Dropped a ball and put it way up in my stance. not as far as a 3 wood or driver but all most. It was even with my front knee. Dropped my back shoulder a little more than normal. (this is the same with my long irons) and let it rip. For the first time they were going. nice divot , medium trajectory, 4h rolled out approx 190-200 and 3h about 210. I did have the face set up a little open like a fade and it faded, but I am bad for shutting the face down and bad things happen then.

My question is. Is this setup horrible?

First off I would not recommend shutting the face, having it a little open is good.  But just have it open because the hands are pushed forward.  And yes the ball faded because it was so far forward in your stance.  The farther forward the ball is, the more you shift the path left.

It seems what helped was the adjustment with the right shoulder.

Hit a hybrid exactly like you would hit a 3 or 4 iron.  Get in your 4-iron setup with your 4-iron, then stick the hybrid in your hands and make the same 4-iron swing.  People probably say "hit it like a 7-iron" with hyperbole: to get you to move from hitting it like a wood to hitting it like a 4-iron.  This is easily the most versatile long club in my bag and I've made so many incredible shots with it.  If you need to, get a steel shafted one until you can get over the mental part of making an iron swing with a hybrid.

So which is correct because I've seen videos on youtube that go both ways...?

do you hit a hybrid like an iron (ie. take a divot)?

or try and sweep it like a fairway wood?

Just hit it I don't use a different swing on a 3 wood then I do a 9 iron.  Club length basically dictates the change in surface contact.  If it helps, pretend like the hybrid is a 5 iron.

I pretty much agree with this. There are a lot of tour players that take divots with their fairway woods.
