This is for anyone playing under a US style handicapping system. Just wondering what your handicap would be if you were playing under the Australian adaptation of the US system?

In the US you take the best ten of your last 20 scores, then multiply by 0.96, right?

In Australia that is changed to the best 8 of you last 20, then multiply by 0.93.

My handicaps would be...

US 13.7

Aus 12.3

I'm curious to see how many shots difference it makes to both high and low handicappers.

I have a CONGU handicap. That's 5x the sum of the number of trees on the first hole and ten divide by the number of cups of tea i drank today.

Two nits to pick...

  1. It's not your best 10 of your last 20 scores. It's your best 10 of your last 20 differentials.
  2. Those numbers aren't your handicap. They're your handicap INDEX. How do you arrive at your course handicap? It might be possible to get the same # of strokes (course handicap) given the different indexes in the different systems.

Yeah, so, taking all that into account, what are you two handicap indexes???

Over here we go on just a course rating. There's no slope here yet. My course is par 71, rated 71 from the middle and 72 from the back. So your differential changes depending on what day it is!

Wow, a whole stroke that low? They made these changes to bring the C graders closer to the field, not the low handicappers!

I'm not sure where you get .96 as a default variable. This is how an index is calculated for each round: (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating

Then the best 10 of 20 are used to determine your official index.  From that number, course handicap can be determined based on the Slope of where you are playing on any given day.  Your course HC will vary depending on the difficulty of the course............

Now lets put that index to use:  let's say you are a 10.5 index playing 2 different courses.

Course 1:  141 slope

10.5x 141/113= Course handicap of 13

Course2: 104 slope

10.5x104/113= course handicap of 10

I hope that helps to clarify things........

See above....

the 0.96 multiplier is the "award for excellence" or something, isn't it? In Aus, that is now 0.93 - It makes your end handicap LOWER.

Yeah this was in place for a while, but earlier this year they changed it to best 8 from last 20, x0.93. Something about bringing the C graders back to the pack. Hasn't worked, there's still a handful of them shooting 7-10 shots under their handicap every day. I have noticed that higher scores are winning A grade these days.... Used to need 40 or 41 stableford points. Recently, 38 has been about the number. C Grade, about 43 points will have a chance! lol

I see that, but the above must be for use for certain exceptions or situations for estimation. (not accurate calculation)

Is the above a link describing how to calculate if you played overseas on a course with no slope rating??

If you play a course in the US with a course and slope rating, this is how it's calculated::::::

(Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating

.96 only works if you are playing a course with a slope of 117-118. If you use real scores with official indexes, you'll see the .96 doesn't work..........

These are official USGA indexes and scores from the GHIN website(my scores ) ..................try using .96 as a default and using my formula (in bold) to see which calculates the correct index.

I don't play or practice as much as I used to so either hitting it well and shooting 75, or having a few bad holes and shooting 82.

I quoted and linked to the official method for calculating handicap indexes. I'm not sure why you're confused.

You get 1.76 as the average and 1.6896 after multiplying by 0.96, for a final handicap index of 1.6 (you drop the decimals after the tenths).

It's pretty clearly explained at the link I provided.

LOL...maybe it's getting late and I'm losing my mind here.  I understand and just realized we are talking about 2 entirely different things.   My bad....Hahaha....I'm talking about the formula to calculate an index for any given round.  Everyone else is obviously talking about something entirely different......

IE....this is where my mind was......

H 10/11 76 72.5/137 2.9

Using my formula 76-72.5x113/137=2.88 which is rounded to 2.9

Using .96:

76-72.5x.96=3.36..............which is way off.  The above is what I thought we were discussing................

My season ending index is 1.6......thanks.......ya nailed it.  it took me awhile, but I'm on the same page now

Yay! lol

For you I get 1.6 US and 1.2 Aus.
