i had been looking for some good base layer long sleeved shirts for the colder weather, and didnt want to pay for the overpriced underarmour stuff (which works, but theres other stuff that works too thats made of the same material).

so the other day im in Target and i see:

and i have to say its good stuff.  kept me warm in 42 degree weather with just a long sleeved cotton tshirt over it.

I bought a Starter brand base layer from Walmart, $14. They have a light and heavy weight, I bought the heavier of the 2. Wore it last weekend, temps were low 30's when we started and mid 40's when we finished. Base, long sleeve golf shirt and jacket to start and ditched the jacket after about 6 holes. For $14 it beats the $50 they want for the UA stuff. I got a white one and plan to go get a black one next time at wallyworld.

is it like a compression shirt?  or does it fit loose?

I would describe it as "fitted". The sleeves fit pretty tight like a compression shirt but the body is not real tight. Comfortable fit.

I could see buying an alternative if I was on a strict budget. But I have several UA Cold Gear items and I will say you get what you pay for. For example, the UA compression shirts... I have three. White, black and gray. These three shirts have been worn for at least five 'winter' seasons in between AZ and CA. And I wash them after every use. They have no noticeable wear and tear outside of the logo wearing off. They have no thread tears or pulls. In my opinion, a shirt like that - that you spend $45 to $50 is worth every penny. They just last and last. And keep you warm- which is the point of the product.

Target sells some nice thermals under the, "Champion' brandname.  They go for about $20 and IMO are every bit as good as UA.  My girlfriend and her family are all Maryland alums, so I like to support UA but their stuff isnt THAT much better that its worth paying twice as much for.  A lot of what you are paying for with UA is the image of the UA brand.

Whats in my :sunmountain: C-130 cart bag?

yeah, thats exactly what i got.  also, lets say the workmanship is that much better and you have to buy a new shirt, at $40 most, cheaper if you get them on sale, youre still spending less than 1 UA shirt.

I live in the Tampa Bay area so I really do not need the full bore cold weather gear....LOL

I have found that the Nike Sleeves work well.  They can be used early, then easily removed as it warms up.

Exactly.  I wear my base layers for fall golf and for playing hockey and going to hockey games and even after 3 years they dont show any signs of wear or stretching.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
