Well I read an article about ball flight theories from a guy by the name of Doug Dahle.

He writes allot of articles that are really good and I was particularly interested in the Theory of Ball flight as well as the corresponding articles. I just thought I would share this with everyone as well as the rest of Doug Dahles articles.

His ball flight theory is wrong.  Nonetheless, I'm glad they found (and removed) his tumor.

Unfortunately John Jacobs gets the ball flight laws wrong.  This is not my opinion, this is just physics and backed up by leading Dopper Radar analysis systems like Trackman and FlightScope

The article says:

The 4 influences on the fight of the ball are:

1. Face- Where the clubface points the ball will ultimately end up.

2. Swing Path- The path the club travels tells the golf ball where to start. The club face tells it where to finish.

3. Angle- The angle the club takes to approach the ball determines the trajectory of the shot.

4. speed- the clubhead speed determines how far the ball will go

The face angle primarily determines the ball's start line.  The face is a tool of projection and the ball curves away from the path.

Here are a couple good articles to check out

I wouldn't go as far to say that his ball flight theory is completely wrong. There are some points that are debatable. and allot of the points that he makes  are very correct. Physics in my understanding does work in his theory, although maybe not quite to the extent as is suggested.  I think mvmacs post is really helpful.

Either way, he has allot of useful information even if you don't agree with each point he has brought up and all of his "theories".

The last thing is, and one of the reasons for this forum is to share information. if you have some, then could you share it with the rest of the forum? After all many of us are here to learn new things which can be done often by understanding.

Thanks for your input Tomboys

I wouldn't go as far to say that his ball flight theory is wrong. There are some points that are debatable but the "theory" can be scientifically backed up with the general physics. The debate is mainly between face and swing path. They both affect similar areas of the ball flight and this has been pushed back and forth before.

I would, because it is wrong. Follow the liks mvmac posted. Those are the real ball flight laws. This is not debatable, it is confirmed by radars, high speed cameras, physics etc.

Thanks for the post Mvmac! That is very helpfull!

I had not realized the old ball theories were incorrect like that and just thought that it was some really good info

Kudos to you Rednax1530!

If only all threads on the ball flight laws were like this one.

And thanks for wanting to share good info.  I grew up, as most do, with "path controlled start line laws" and eventually learned otherwise.  It's starting to change, slowly, but starting to change.   Thanks for taking a look at the info and open to learning

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
