Hello all,

Played my second round of golf , got 78 off 9 holes, got my FIRST par, and 2 double quadruple boggie lol!! I feel elated and depressed, but I have SO got the golfing bug, it's kinda scary.. I have so much to learn, and always think about what I should have done after each shot..

To cut long story short, I thought about getting a practise net in backyard, to work on getting swing consistant.. I don't know the benefits , if there are any in doing this...It doesn'r really sow whether I hit it a certain distance or whether it was hit perfectly straight...

Can anyone help  me out with this?? I really want to improve, time and money constraints sadly limit me and my practise time, well its a wife and 3 kids, and a bloody mortgage and a full on job lol..

Please help with any ideas.

Thank you in advance.

First of all, congrats on the par.

As for the net, skip it is my suggestion.

Get some cheap (very cheap) balls and find a field.

You need the feedback (we all do) of where the ball is going based on what you are doing with the club.

Sorry, but I disagree.  I bought some cheap balls and found a field, and did a lot of damage to my game by focusing too much on how far - or short - I was hitting the ball.

I have a net now, and I find it much easier to groove my swing as I make changes.  I can focus better on contact when I'm hitting into the net.  The better the contact, the better the shot.  Even as inflated as my handicap is, I can tell what the shape of the shot is based on the contact I made.

It's all about what you're working on. If I'm trying to groove a certain feeling or thought in the swing, the ball flight and end result are irrelevant so working in a net is ideal (it forces you to ignore the result which means more focus on the main practice point) If you're experimenting to figure out what certain changes do to your swing you need feedback so a range/field is a better option. Horses for courses.

I just got a cheapie $30 net .. Set it up, yesterday... LOVE IT!!...

I focus on trying to develop a smoothe swing, whilst focusing on a couple of other swing principles.. Head still, straight arm during swing, relaxed backswing.. Nothing too extreme, but just common sense fundamentals of  golf..

In terms of distance or accuracy in a net, well, for me it's the swing and technique of golf that is the priority when using a net, still when I hit a shot that feels great, from backswing, downswing, balance to contact, and basic direction, I feel that I have got a reasonable idea that the shot will most likely be nice and straight... A driving range would be better, but I don't have a big enough backyard for that :)

I also have a little camera that takes pretty reasonable video, I am hoping that over next few weeks if my game improves a little, to the point where I am feeling not overly stupid, then I may post a couple of videos for u to critique, if thats ok?

for as long as I can remember back, my dad always had a practice net in the back yard, I went to college because of that net, so I would say they are..

I have a 10 x 10 hitting cage and matt from skillbuilder.com. I hit 500 balls a week on average. I've been doing that for about 5 years. That's over 125,000 swings. Even with a very busy work and family schedule I was able to bring my game into the 80cs. I do find that hitting the ball off of rubber tee's with hybrids and woods allows my to swing free and natural. I practice my short game in a nearby field.

I like using a net in the backyard for convenience.  I also like being able to focus on my swing, not where the ball goes.

One other thing you might consider if you have an average sized backyard is setting up a little chipping range.  I bought three small chipping practice target nets for $7 a piece on amazon and I set them up anywhere between 5' to 50' and chip away.  This can become addicting.  If its cold or rainy outside I just set them up inside a few yards apart.  Being new to the game you will really, really benefit from short game improvement.

    • Day 49 - 2024-11-18 Light day of HackMotion work in the basement with my putting. Suffice to say my feels very closely align with what is measured.
    • Day 200 (18 Nov 24) - Broke out the MacGregor blades to do some “vintage” club pitches and chips.  Focus was on alignment and where I am looking in relation to the ball…have been working on finding a focal point about 3-6 inches ahead of the ball (toward the target) and not staring at the ball.  Getting very predictable strikes.  Overall it was a fun drill session and will serve as a warmup to tomorrow’s planned front 9 walk with these irons and persimmon woods and of course a “new” putter - a Acushnet Bullseye…
    • TV ratings  continue to drop. Stop the endless wiggles and waggles.
    • I believe that losing a tour card is too extreme but definitely agree that more needs to be done to prevent slow play.
    • Its way past time both tours  have  major  penalties for  slow  play. I  hate  it when they say" This group is  on the  clock". Big damn deal. Issue  penalties. Maybe Hull is a  bit too harsh but  its time a slew  of  2 stroke  penalties start  being  issued.     Charley Hull is fed up with slow play on the LPGA, so she offered a ‘ruthless’ solution “I’m quite ruthless, but I said, ‘Listen, if you get three bad timings, every time it’s a tee shot penalty; if you have three of them, you lose your Tour card instantly.’ I’m sure that would hurry a lot of people up, and they won’t want to lose their Tour card. That would kill the slow play, but they would never do that.” Who knows if that will work. But if it does not, maybe the PGA Tour should adopt Hull’s idea. The LPGA should, too, or at least assess penalty strokes for slow play. Five-hour rounds for a final group on Sunday is unacceptable and a quick way to lose interest and engagement from fans.
