For most people, the overlap is a better grip because the interlock limits your wrist action too much.  I know that a lot of people use the excuse that Woods and Nicklaus both use the interlock so it must be better but those guys are freaks of nature.

I used to use the interlock but always fought a push.  Last year I switched to the overlap and its greatly straightened my shots and improved my distance.  Now I hit a nice, little draw and am much more consistent.

I've always read that the interlock grip gives you more freedom with the hands, and the problem can be too much wrist action .

I've never heard that but I can completely understand that.  I use the interlock grip and my biggest problem that I notice is that I have to much wrist action at times.

When I made major swing changes about ten years ago, everything changed including my grip. So I also changed from interlocking to overlap so that it felt different and I would be less likely to revert back to my old/bad grip. So, I don't think it matters, but if you make a big change in grip positions, consider a change for you current fingering too.

When I interlock, I feel like my wrists want to straighten more naturally, therefore making it very difficult to retain clubhead lag. When I overlap, I feel like I can lead with my left side better and hold my wedge thru impact. This is all in theory, of course. Most of my swings are garbage whether I'm interlocking, overlapping, baseballing, hell I could be Happy Gilmoreing.
