Hi everyone, I was planning on getting more wedges once I got a new iron set but now I am thinking I may need them sooner. I only have a pitching wedge right now, and I noticed that I struggle within 90 yards of the green a lot. My friends are able to play pitch and other short shots much better than me. Would you guys recommend I buy more? Or should I just focus on improving with my pitching wedge

At least a sand wedge if you are a newbie.

Wedges are a personal thing - some days I carry 5, other days 3.

At one point I had a 52, 56, 60, 64, and of course a pitching wedge. I like having a lot of wedges especially that 64. I took it out because I had more than 14 but I'm thinking I'm going to take out my 4 or 9 iron out to put the 64 back in. I find that I never hit the 9 iron and I'm good at hitting half 3 hybrid shots.

I think the common wedge setup of PW 52 56 60 is a good one of even a PW 52 58 works if you're comfortable using one wedge for more shots.

As it is right now, I only carry a 54 60 and there are a few times I wish I had a 52 still but not enough that it effects my game.  I can usually choke off a PW and get the right distance.

As mentioned you should at least get a sand wedge or something around a 56. I have 4, a PW, 52, 56, and a 60 but I also have a 64 and a 68 if I need it. I bought the 68 for fun but actually it has done some good for me on certain courses. At my home course I stick with 4 wedges but will change them depending on the course.

lob wedges are not NEARLY as hard to hit as they are made out to be. You should at least a 54-56* and then a 58-60*. Trust me, I started out with one,  lobbs are extremely useful, and fun for practicing too. Pretty soon, it become a part of you. You'll be like brothers, only closer.

you should DEFINITELY have more than just a PW.  PW goes about ~130.  I carry a 58 degree for full shots around 95 yds, a AW for 115 yards and a 53 for around 105 yards.  75% of all golf is played 125 yards and in so i think having as many full wedges as you can hit keeps things simple.

from (30-75) yards you can hit a pitch shot with either a 58 or 53..

Just my two cents.. hope it helps

Ok guys,

Thank you for all your input,

I will probably order some this week,

Maybe even tomorrow.

Should I get a 52 a 56 and a 60?

Any of these that I wouldn't ever use?

If I only get two of these three I can get them for free by using my paypal money.

Which would you guys get?

My choices are 52 gap wedge, 56 or 58 sand wedge, 60 or 62 lob wedge.

At the very least you want a sand wedge.  Anything beyond that is up to you.

Depends on your swing speed.  Does the club "swoosh" when you swing it?

No it doesn't. I may get all three, if I don't I will get the lob and the sand wedge

I went out today, and it turns out that I do swoosh.

I am just going to go gigagolf so I will follow their recommendations.

If you're going to replace your irons this season, you might go with just a SW in the short run as an additional wedge. Lots of good ones available from models a couple of years old. The SW will allow you to get out of bunkers, and hit greenside shots from fluffy lies.

If you get new irons, your distances could be different than those with your current irons. Most people strive for 4 ° to 6° of loft difference from wedge to wedge, so you don't want to buy a bunch of wedges if you're not sure how they will mesh distance-wise with a future new iron set.

Most people keep the iron set's PW, and then either get matching iron-set wedges or go outside the model for specialty wedges . These specialty wedges - such as Vokey, Cle CG16, Callaway Forged -  offer more variety in loft, sole grind and bounce than the stock iron-set wedges. Check out some the manufacturer sites or look around in the golf shops to see what's there.

When you do get a full batch of wedges, you can get fittings for them to make sure they match your swing.

Thank you,

That article was very helpful.

In regards to buying with the iron set I am not going to purchase the irons for a few months in the future,

And as I don't have any wedges right now I believe I am going to go the specialty wedge route,

I am getting sgs wedges from gigagolf most likely.

I will go for the 56 and 60 degree wedges, as I will go with your recommended 4 degree gap and the article's recommended avoidance of the high loft wedge.

I like the idea of having the clubs prefitted and people have reported great success with gigagolf;s efit system.

Thank you,

Sebastian
