Ok I'm a "thrifty" nostalgic golfer... but I have 4 hybrids in my bag... 1,2,3, and 4... The 1 and 2 hybrids I only use off the tee at my home course... So I'm thinking of going more traditional with 3 and 5 woods... (I'm thinking of changing my driver too but that's beside the point)

I was poking around at Dick's Sporting Goods here in Ithaca.... And they have Callaway Warbird woods... I'm thinking about getting the Driver, 3-wood, and 5-wood set which would run me a little over $300 after tax... anyone know anything about these woods... and what to compare them to

on Callaway's line....

Thanks...

No idea about those specific clubs you mention.  But in general I'm a fan of buying better clubs from a year or three ago instead of buying worse, cheaper new clubs.

Also, have you hit a 5W recently?  I like having the 3W in the bag for the extra distance it generally gives over a 15˚ hybrid, but personally I find my 19˚ hybrid more reliable than I ever did my 5W, and I don't mind giving up the ~10 extra yards for better accuracy at that distance.

I have a 9 year old Taylor Made V-steel 5-wood... that I mess around with sometimes... (my girlfriend has it in her bag right now as her 3-wood ish club) I hit the 5-wood relatively high... so being around the same handicap as me... you would recommend just getting the 3-wood and sticking with the 2-hybrid?

It's all personal of course.  I personally found a 2h that I really like, hit pretty well, hit more consistently than I have the 5Ws I've had or borrowed, can hit out of slightly deeper rough than I can the 5W, and comes down softer and holds the green better on long par 3s or approach shots to shortish par 5s than does the 5Ws I've hit.  I'm sure I could find a 5W I could hit farther, but I rarely find myself in a situation where I wish I had a club that would go 225 on a stock shot instead of 215 on a stock shot (from the fairway, not the tee), so I prefer the more consistent club with slightly less distance in that spot.  Plus, if I absolutely need to hit something 225 I can deloft the 2h and really go after it, or if it's hard and there's not bunkers in front I can hit the 3i which comes out way lower and it'll often bounce and roll up.

On the woods, I'll just say, look into the Tour Edge Exotics!  I easily got 10-15 yards extra from that club compared to other 3Ws I've hit, and it's still smooth and hits it nice off the deck.

Those Warbird's are okay.  For that same price you could get better used Callaway woods that look almost new.  If you're willing to spend $375 instead of $300 you could get Diablo Octane 1,3, and 5 in like new condition.  Also, I agree with you on the set makeup.  I carry a 3H and 4H, but prefer fairway woods over 1H and 2H.

Driver:  Callaway Diablo Octane 9.5*
3W:  Callaway GBB II 12.5*, 5W:  Callaway Diablo 18* Neutral
3H:  Callaway Razr X, 4H:  Callaway Razr X
5-PW:  Callaway X Tour
GW:  Callaway X Tour 54*, SW:  Callaway X Tour 58*
Putter:  Callaway ITrax, Scotty Cameron Studio Design 2, Ping Anser 4

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
