It has got to be the distance thing. A guy I work with says he hits it over 300 every drive. He indicated that he hits it over the 300 sign at our driving range. The problem is that the last sign says 270 and then there is a very large net that the sign is attached too. ;)

Driving distance is #1.

HAHA that is my buddy. The "I never play this bad" guy. I like to lie and say I suck then go out and make some pars. That makes me feel good. I hate to lie about my score because who does that benefit. Your ego, BFD.

Haha!!! So true! I know guys who play

all the time but for some reason whenever I play with them I get this excuse on the first tee. Or after they make double on the first hole.0 I mean, some of these guys are retired and live golf.

My favorite is when somebody birdies a 440 yard par 4 they say driver, wedge and made the putt. Paaaaleeeeze.

This isn't that ridicules. Depends on the player I guess.

There is a 460 yard par 4 at a course I play, last two times I have played it, Driver, O.B, Driver, Gap Wedge, Putt, Putt for a 6 and then a Driver, Pitching Wedge, Putt, Putt for a 4. It plays way down hill though, and I have had drives of 360 and 340 on the hole last two times.

I was playing with this guy who was around 50 years old, and really not that great of a player at all. On this one hold, you have to hit it over this ditch, which isn't hard. As long as you hit it longer then 150 yards, you'll be fine. He steps up to the tee with a 4 iron and completely shanks it right into the ditch. He turns to me and says, "Its weird how I can constantly drive 300 yards, but when there is a ditch there I cant hit the ball at all." I kinda just chuckled and said to myself, "300 yard drive? Ya right."

I would agree it is probably distance. However, permit me a slightly tangential rant: I am 6'2" 220lbs and a former college athelete...I can swing the club at or around 150mph(I don't on the course, but can) I can hit a driver 300+, but usually don't. Being an army golfer (left, right, left, right) my literal average drive is probably around 220...but that includes a 320, a 120 worm burner, and a couple out of bounds. So what would be the correct answer to how far I hit my driver?

This comes into play for me even more with irons. IF, and big IF, I make solid crisp contact I hit my PW iron 145 yards. However, being an inconsistent ball striker that clubs average is probably closer to 110-120. Now if I am 145 yds out what club should I use? If I hit the PW right it is the right club, but I would say that I hit it perfectly 50% of the time. Do I pull 9iron, and if I hit that club right I am in the same predicament as if I hit my pitching wedge wrong. Obviously course layout has something to do with selection i.e. if there is water in front or back. But it is hard for me to not pull the club that would be the right distance on a perfect swing, because anything else is expecting and/or inviting a bad swing.

The obvious answer is practice and gaining consistency, but what do you do in the present?

"Hunny, I won't buy any more golf stuff this year".

But probably we lie most to ourselves -
"I can hit a 7iron 160 yards - when it actually only goes about 140yd"

I once played with a guy who according to himself had a small draw - my opinon - it was a QUICKHOOK! From that day I never use the words draw or fade, I hook or I slice - but I never ever draws or fades a ball, cause I have no idea on how to do either.

Try to shorten your backswing in order to gain more control on the hit, but I would recommend you to see your local pro.

The 300 yard drive, no doubt about it. We have a par 5 and from the white tees it's only 456yds. Hardly see many that get by/to the 200 yard marker and that would make it a 256 yrd drive and they still say it was 300 plus drive.

This is a very interesting thread. My regular golf buddies and I are often amazed by scores that are turned in by fellows that we just played 18 holes with.... WOW! (counting a score should be simple) I am really put off by fellows that can take 4 strokes to get on to a 4 par green and score bogie, the same guys turn in score cards of 81 shots to a 72 par.....after hacking for most of the day. It might be very hard to write down a true score (today I shot horrible golf 34 over) however we count every penalty, use every drive... the USGA has established rules for a reason. We know that every round of golf is not going to be good and we get an absolute thrill when we actually lower our average round scores by a few strokes. We look forward to our weekend rounds and every one of my regular golf buddies (me included) wishes that we were able to play golf 7 days a week.... but alas we are not professionals and we are not guys that have been playing since elementary school... some of our regular players have restricted swings due to injuries and some of us are just getting older but our scores are honest... we love to shoot 80 and rue the day when we are on track to shoot 79 when we approach the tee box on number 17 ... and you guessed it hit the drive O.B.

Hey this is a long post (sorry about rambling on) lie about distance if you must but post an honest score... how else can you celebrate (really celebrate a good round posted by a buddy or yourself)

Concerning driving distance
Now I usually get off one or two drives per round that finish between 280 and 300 yards in regulation... I hit bunches of 300 Plus drives that veer O.B. Ouch ... It seems that the hardest hit balls always hit a tree branch..

happy golfing!

The most common lie? The actual score.

I would have to agree with this. Even though I just started playing again a few weeks ago, I have already noticed this.
