Just played the first round with the ap1's I just bought off the net but I still can't get off the tee long as I'm unable to hit driver off the tee without difficulty so I'm constantly hitting 4 iron off the tee and obviously losing yardage to playing partners but more worryingly probably losing shots per round. Currently using a nike vr str8 fit 8.5 degree driver that I bought off ebay second hand but I was told today that the degree loft was too short and harder too hit so I'm left wandering do I purchase something with larger loft or go with a hybrid just to make it that much easier?any suggestions would be appreciated guys

Have you tried to tee off with either a three wood or a five wood instead?

Often times, with three wood, you'll be able to control it a lot better without losing that much distance relative to the driver.

Once you get really good with the three wood, then and only then would I start hitting the driver.

Taylormade RBZ 3 wood may be a good way to go. Club goes very far and will have about 15* of loft that will help get the ball up in the air and go further. If you're like many 20 handicaps you don't generate enough club head speed or have the correct angle of attack for an 8.5* driver. I'd say look into the RBZ 3 wood or a 10.5* driver.

yea the thats the thing either hitting it really low or hitting a wild slice so maybe the 3 wood would be a good option for me at the moment. I think once I can get off the tee well then I should start to get more confident, hoping to get somewere this weekend to trial a few new ones see how I go with them, anyone got any opinions on the 910 3 wood thats out their at the moment?

I really like the idea of the RBZ 3 wood but i would try to work on your release on the driver. More consistent contact and lower trajectory tend to lead to a longer drives. Also try putting the ball farther forward in your stand and lower your back shoulder. I added 20 yards to my driver doing this.

I'm over 60 and I hit my 10.5* driver about 230. I just went to a RBZ 3 wood and every shot off the tee box is 240-250 and i RARELY miss a fairway! Have "retired" my driver to the garage!

i bought my 910F-d fairway wood for specifically hitting it off the tee more...thing is a beast.

8.5° of loft (and 45.75" long stock), there's the problem.  I think you'll find yourself much happier off the tee with a driver of 10.5° to 12° or even 13° of loft, and a length of 43.5" to 44.5".

I'm sure there probably is a little OTT or some other swing fault causing you to slice, but the 8.5° and the club length is certainly doing you no favors.  If you are hitting the ball low on the face, there might only be 5.5° to 6.5° of loft at that spot.

    • Day 34 (14 Dec 25) - Got outside for a few moments to work on bump and runs with the 4h (again using the exaggerated weight shift reminder of the left (lead) heel). Finding that it helps keep the downswing arc extended.

    • I am currently playing a Cobra Ltdx LS 9 degree driver and Cobra Ltdx LS FW3. Both with Tensei White stock stiff shafts and original weights of 12g (heel) and 3g (toe). My miss is usually a pull fade or sometimes a slice, swing is out to in. Driver swing speed about 112 mph. Grips are stock regular. Intended change: Driver: Switching to Tensei White x-flex one inch shorter which I suppose would be 44,5? Changing heel weight to 18g. Changing grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Change hosel setting to standard draw. FW3: Changing heel weight to 16g (apparently not available in FW weights, but supposed to be something called "internal weight" a club builder can add which fits between the weight and the screw?). Change grip to Golf Pride Z-grip cord midsize. Changing hosel setting to standard +1. The goal is to 1) get better grip since I tend so lose grip in warm and moist conditions with the current grips and 2) mitigate the misses to start more straight with less side spin. Also considering adding the Cobra Ltdx LS FW5 instead of my old Taylormade R9 and getting 14g heel and 6g toe weights with the same grip as the others and hosel setting standard +1.   All of the above is based on conversations with ChatGPT and, as everyone knows, it can come up with pretty much whatever but I spent a few hours asking about different perspectives etc and this was the recommendation. So, my question is basically, does it make any sense?   Thanks.
